Human Rights Committee February 1st marks the first day of Black History Month in the United States. The celebration has a long tradition that can be traced back to 1925 when Harvard trained-historian Carter G. Woodson introduced “Negro History Week”, which sought to raise awareness of the contributions made by Black individuals to society and the […]
Master Executive Council (MEC) Twenty-three years ago today, we tragically lost Alaska Airlines Flight 261, flying between Puerto Vallarta and San Francisco, when it went down in the Pacific Ocean between Port Hueneme and Anacapa Island off the coast of Southern California. We will never forget Flight Attendants Kristin Mills, Craig Pulanco and Allison Shanks; […]
Air Safety, Health, & Security Committee (ASHSC) As previously communicated, AFA and management agreed to conduct a Line Operations Safety Audit (LOSA) to help improve safety for Flight Attendants, other crewmembers, and passengers. The LOSA program is jointly administered by AFA and management as outlined in the Inflight Line Operations Safety Audit (LOSA) Program letter of agreement. The […]
Master Executive Council (MEC) In 2019, AFA filed grievance number 36-99-2-170-19, which alleged management’s violation of section 19.A of the collective bargaining agreement. The violation was related to an incident where management conducted a debrief meeting with Flight Attendants while they were still on duty following a slide deployment incident. As there was no contractual […]

California meal & rest breaks Management’s continued scare tactics and speculative “what-if’s” as put forward during the Inflight Town Hall webcast today regarding California meal & rest breaks are unnecessary and extremely disappointing. Although it is true there are some challenging aspects of compliance with California meal & rest break laws for commercial aviation, AFA […]

What is the maximum percentage of trips that the contract will allow the company to build with the Long Stage Length Duty Period? Also, I see where 10% of the trips “and Crew Planning anticipates more” can be given to other bases when the pairing is built as a multi-day. Is there a cap on the percentage of these trips that can be given to other bases?
Christina Frees (Negotiating Committee Member) says
There is no maximum contractual amount HOWEVER there is a practical maximum based on the limitations of the provision. It can only contain 2 legs which must start and end in the same domicile and can not exceed 2,000 Miles one way, 4,000 round trip. This is a limited amount of Midwest cities. Based on the cities we currently fly to, the pairings containing a 4K sequence represent only 5% of the total pairings for all flying in our system.
Trish mclain says
So to clarify, in the contract there is no maximum amount of pairings that can have this duty period in them. (In other words, it can be unlimited as long as it fits within the 4000 mile range). This contract wilI be around for a long time and I am concerned about how this will affect future cities we get that are within 4000 miles round-trip. And again, is there a cap on how many of these pairings can be given away to other bases?
Jeffrey Peterson (MEC President) says
That is correct–no contractual maximum. There is of course a practical maximum as you mention in that only pairings over a 10:30 duty day but within 4000 miles round trip qualify. No more than 90% of the 4k pairings can be built out of a single domicile; no less than 10% may be built out of the other domiciles and must be rotated (i.e. distributed) between them.

Is there a chance of seeing what type of pairings were left after this? Ie…in ANC, LAX etc…assuming these were in SEA. Maybe just a summary with avg TFP kind of like we get each month?

The link above provides you with examples of pairings built with the 4k option. These pairings represent 5% of the total pairings. Leaving 95% similar to today.
