    Hot Topic: OpenTime Update

    November 18, 2014 11:28

In TA2 what are the changes to our OT?

The purpose of creating a new OT trial is to create a better, more equitable trading system that increases Flight Attendants’ flexibility in modifying their schedules and to improve predictability of staffing and limit the impact of sequence drops to OT on reserve coverage.

What day will OT trading start?

For all Flight Attendants the OT and FA to FA trading will open on the 15th of each month.

Will all days be open when OT trading begins?

All days in OT will start open for trading and will only close when the day exceeds  the sequence threshold number.  If the sequence threshold is met the day closes, but if subsequently a trip is picked up from OT taking the count below the maximum threshold the day will reopen.

What does it mean when a day in OT is limited?

It means you can still trade down with an OT trip coded TO/CP.  With any other trip you can trade day for day or greater.

What is the net maximum TFP I can drop into OT?

FAs will have the ability to drop a net maximum of 40 TFP into OT without having to pick up a trip from OT. Straight drop.

    Crew Scheduling Discretion?

Eliminated. The closing/opening of days will be automated and not at the discretion of Crew Scheduling.

Will Trips be withheld from OT trading day on the 15th?

No.  All trips will be in OT available for trading.

Is there any seeding of OT?

No.  However, some trips may fall into OT because they were not awarded on bid schedules.  By eliminating the requirement to fund OT, more Flight Attendants will be lineholders.

Do the sequences not awarded during PBS bidding count in OT towards the threshold?

No. Sequences not awarded including 4k sequences will not count toward the daily threshold sequence number, they would be in addition.

if new bases such as SLC opens or ORD could this effect more trips and layover paring as well? I know that’s not what’s we have now but in the event this happens in the future.

        November 18, 2014 at 16:36

        Hi Andrea,

In the event of a new base being opened that domicile would have the same provisions for OT regarding the threshold sequence number with a minimum of 3 daily sequences. Additional sequences would be added to the threshold if the newly opened domicile exceeded a Flight Attendant population equal to or in excess of 650 FAs.

When will OT, reserve self assigning, jet bridge trades etc… (basically all parts of TA2 that require new programing) be implemented??? Are these dates firm or a general idea??? What recourse do we have if the company hasn’t brought everything online, in full working order, by agreed to dates??? Please list any other parts of TA2 that will not go into effect at Date of Signing & there proposed effective date and recourse for non-implementation.

        Hi Angela,

Here is a link to a blog post regarding the implementation. http://afaalaska.org/negotiations/what-is-our-implementation-schedule-for-the-changes-in-ta2

There are no penalties negotiated in TA2 for not meeting the implementation schedule.

Do we have a proposed timeline for new OT system to be operational should TA2 pass? Timeline on any of the other changes that will require programming?

What are the threshold numbers for each base?

      • Jake Jones (SEA LEC Vice President/Negotiating Committee Member) says

        November 18, 2014 at 13:32

        Hi Pam,

Threshold sequence number determination at each domicile will be determined monthly based on the number of Flight Attendants in each domicile’s entire seniority list.

Up to 649 FAs – 3 daily sequences
        650 FA = – 4 daily sequences
Every additional 200 FA – 1 additional daily sequence departure

SAN (251 FAs) = 3 daily sequences (90 sequences, 3 per day, to close 30 day month)
LAX (479 FAs) = 3 daily sequences (90 sequences, 3 per day, to close 30 day month)
ANC (351 FAs) = 3 daily sequences (90 sequences, 3 per day, to close 30 day month)
PDX (428 FAs) = 3 daily sequences (90 sequences, 3 per day, to close 30 day month)
SEA (1850 FAs) = 10 daily sequences(300 sequences, 10 per day, to close 30 day month)

If all bases, all days in a 30 day month were closed there would be system wide 660 sequences available in OT.

Alaska Airlines management gave us 1.9 billion reasons this week to join the picket line on December 19! We will not be distracted from our goal of an industry-leading contract for our Flight Attendants.
Our AFA Inflight Service Committee Chairpersons met on November 29 to represent Flight Attendants' interests related to catering and onboard service/sales. The Committee met with management to discuss and receive updates on issues and problems faced by Flight Attendants onboard. The Committee continues to work with management to address catering concerns and improve processes in the future. Please report catering issues through Block2Block and safety-related issues through ReportIt!
Our AFA Alaska Master Executive Council (MEC) met this week on Wednesday, December 6, to conduct their ongoing work to represent our Flight Attendants. The MEC’s quarterly meeting with executive management and a group of union leaders from other company workgroups was postponed due to the merger announcement and other scheduling conflicts. The next Regular MEC Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 9, and Wednesday, January 10.
Alaska Flight Attendants are struggling to afford living expenses, let alone enjoy holiday shopping for their loved ones. It’s time for Alaska management to prove they care with an industry leading contract!
On December 14, 2023, United Airlines Flight Attendants will take to the picket line - their holiday spirit of unity and solidarity burning brighter than ever. They are determined to strengthen their power and demonstrate their unwavering commitment to securing a contract that genuinely values their work and contributions to United Airlines. As holiday travelers take to the skies, United AFA Flight Attendants will ensure their voices are heard loud and clear. They are unified and ready to do "Whatever It Takes" to get the contract they have rightfully earned!
Starting a career as a Flight Attendant is more challenging than ever due to low pay rates that haven't kept up with the cost of living. Many new Flight Attendants face difficulties securing housing and food in expensive cities where they are based. Our EAP Committee has created a new website page with comprehensive information on resources to help Flight Attendants overcome these obstacles.
