New Aircraft Acquisition Negotiations
According to Section 27.C.2 of the AFA Hawaiian Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), the company must enter into negotiations when acquiring new aircraft. The company announced plans to acquire additional 787s in January of this year. However, AFA received the official letter of intent on Tuesday, September 8, 2026 confirming plans that the company intends to acquire 787s in the Dash 10 (787-10) model.
Compared to the 787-9 currently in operation, the 787-10 has a higher passenger seat capacity and is optimized for Medium Haul flying. The 787-9 has a lower passenger seat capacity, but a longer range of flying.
In the past, new aircraft negotiations have covered pay, rules, and working conditions on board the aircraft including staffing and service.
787-10 Negotiating Committee
The pre-merger Hawaiian Local Executive Council Presidents Kela Chong representing Council 43 (HNL) and Joshua Aoki representing Council 47 (LAX/SEA) have elected the following members to the 787-10 Negotiating Committee:
- Martin Gusman
- Jeff Fuke
- Bianca McKee
Martin and Jeff are current members of the Joint Negotiating Committee and have served on several negotiating committees including Section 6, Seattle Domicile and previous new equipment negotiations. Martin’s experience in scheduling, PBS and as the previous Local Executive Council 43 President will add important bargaining experience to the team. Jeff’s experience in grievance and contract enforcement gives him valuable insight into protecting our contractual rights. Bianca is the current MEC Inflight Service Committee Chairperson and has actively advocated for Hawaiian Flight Attendants during recent service changes. Her experience with both Medium Haul and 787-9 service makes her a valuable member as we work to maintain fair workloads and staffing.
The 787-10 Negotiating Committee will be joined by Paula Mastrangelo, AFA Senior Staff Negotiator, and Tim Green, MEC President, who will serve as Chairperson.
