Uniform Committee Meeting Recap – 4th Quarter 2025

This message is for pre-merger Alaska Flight Attendants

On Wednesday, November 12, our AFA Local Uniform Committee Chairpersons met to discuss their ongoing work to represent Flight Attendants and push for improvements in the workplace. Representing you at the meeting were Kim Mazzolini (ANC), Dena Heath (SEA), David Jelinek (PDX), Lisa Mueller (SFO), Heather Holmes (LAX), and JP Perina (SAN). Horizon AFA MEC Uniform Committee Chairperson Norann Mann and MEC Uniform Committee Chairperson Kiara Jenkins were also present.

The committee also met with SFO Inflight Base Manager Cierra Lewis, PDX Inflight Base Manager Kristie Stafford, SEA Fit Center Manager Ashley Sentner, Director of Procurement and Logistics Eric Phillipson, Senior Product Manager Marketing Megan Low, and Flight Attendant Experience Manager Dre Gohlke.

The next Quarterly Uniform Committee Meeting will be held on Thursday, February 19, 2026.

Topics of Discussion 

The committee reviewed several topics both during internal AFA-only conversation and when meeting with management. Some items discussed include:

  • Transition Jacket With Dresses
    • The Committee is still asking for the transition jacket to be allowed with the dresses. Management is keeping the current policies in place and is not making changes right now as we move to the new uniform.
  • AFA Involvement With The New Uniform Process
    • Management has committed to keeping the Committee involved with the new uniform process so that we may represent the Flight Attendant group and their concerns as the project moves forward. 
  • Copper River Vest
    • The Committee has requested that the Copper River Vest be allowed when flying within the state of Alaska.
    • Management is hesitant to allow this since a decision has not been made on how it will fit with the new uniform. 
  • Occfit Compression Hosiery and Shoes
    • Because of changes in state laws, Occfit is not available at all bases.
    • The committee is working with HR and Occfit to find a new solution.
  • Hosiery and Nylons
    • Due to rising costs, the Committee is working on ways to offer a discount on these items. 
    • The Committee is reaching out to other airlines to determine what they offer to their workgroups. 
  • Seasonal Boots
    • The Committee and management realize that the availability of the boots on the approved list changes with the seasons. 
    • The list of approved seasonal boots is intended for reference purposes.
    • If a Flight Attendant finds similar boots that are not on the list, they should ask their supervisor for approval.
  • Current Uniform Inventory
    • As we move towards the new uniform, some items with the current uniform may no longer be available.
    • The Aura dress, Aura blazer, and Gilet are no longer being made. Once the current stock runs out, they will not be restocked.
    • The Quarter Zip Cardigan was brought back for a one-time run. The inventory is now gone, and it has been removed from the Unisync site.
  • Specialty Tie and Scarves
    • People have noticed quality differences between the Luly Unisync designs and the specialty designs.
    • The Unisync ties and scarves are made of polyester, while the specialty ones are silk from a previous supplier. The silk designs are less durable and wear out faster.
    • Because there is too much inventory, changing materials is not possible right now.
    • The Committee has asked for Honor Flights to be added to the list of occasions when the Patriotic Tie and Scarf can be worn.

What The Committee Is Working On

  1. Easier Reporting of Quality Concerns
    1. Management is working to add the ability to report quality concerns directly from your IMD. We are getting closer, and hopefully, this feature will be available in the next couple of months. 
    1. To ensure issues are addressed until the new IMD feature is available, please submit quality concerns using the Quality Concern Form on Team AAG > Other Resources > Uniforms > Safety & Quality > Quality > Here [AAG SSO required]. This will enable Unisync and the AFA Uniform Committee to track recurring issues. Changes can only be made if the vendor is provided with sufficient data and evidence of quality concerns.
  2. Policy and Standards Expectations of New Uniform
    1. The Committee and management are aware of the challenges ahead as we move forward with the new uniform and a global look. 
    1. Management will begin exploring ways to engage Flight Attendants as we approach the launch of the new uniform. 
  3. SEA Fit Center will be moving to the new Global Training Center (GTC)
    1. The last day appointments are available at the Fit Center at the Hub will be December 5th. Flight Attendants who need to try on garments or require in-person support should schedule an appointment prior to December 5. Flight Attendants who have alterations currently in the Fit Center ready for pickup are being contacted to collect their items. They are being notified that if they are not picked up by December 1, they will be co-mailed to the base. Please contact your supervisor or the Fit Center before sending any items in for alterations. 
    1. Between December 8 and January 2, management will be relocating from the HUB to the GTC. During this period, they will check their email periodically, and responses may be delayed. Phone calls may not be the most reliable method of contact. In-person support will not be available, as management will not have access to the building until January 5.

Meet Our Pre-Merger Alaska Committee Chairperson & Representatives

This message is for pre-merger Alaska Flight Attendants

We’re excited to introduce the first group of pre-merger Alaska MEC Committee Chairpersons and Representatives for the upcoming MEC Officer term. They’ll begin transitioning into their roles over the next few months and officially start their terms on January 1, 2026. Below, you’ll find brief biographies that highlight their backgrounds and experiences as they prepare to support our Flight Attendant group.

Stephanie Adams, MEC Grievance Committee Chairperson

Stephanie has been a Flight Attendant for 28 years and is a licensed attorney in Washington. She graduated from Seattle University School of Law in 2003. Stephanie began her career with Alaska Airlines 30 years ago, starting as a Reservation Sales Agent for one year, followed by a year as a Customer Service Agent before becoming a Flight Attendant. For the past nine years, she has served as the MEC Grievance Committee Chairperson. Stephanie became involved with the AFA to help fellow Flight Attendants and looks forward to continuing her support through the grievance process and navigating the collective bargaining agreement.

Outside of work, Stephanie enjoys spending time with her two young adult children and traveling with them. She also has a golden retriever named Murphy and two cats, Milo and Teddy, who receive a lot of her attention. Last year, she ran the New York City Marathon, and New York City is her favorite layover destination.

Bianca Dew, MEC Grievance Committee Assistant

Bianca started her career in 2015 at Virgin America as an SFO-based flight attendant. She holds Associate of Arts in Behavioral Science and a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from California Baptist University. After some time flying, she became an Inflight Team Lead and then an Air Transportation Supervisor, where she conducted IOEs and check rides. 

Her dedication to the well-being of her peers led her to become actively involved with AFA. She served as the Legacy Virgin America Scheduling Committee Chairperson and currently as MEC Grievance Committee Assistant, where she continues to represent our Flight Attendants. Bianca has remained a steadfast advocate for the needs of Flight Attendants, leveraging her experience to help address the unique challenges of our profession.

Bianca is currently SEA-based, but when she’s not working, Bianca can be found pursuing her love for the outdoors. An avid traveler, she enjoys hiking, reading, gardening, and snowboarding.

Julie Thornton, MEC Grievance Committee Payroll Representative

Julie Thornton is a proud Seattle native, who earned dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in Communication and Spanish from the University of Washington. Her college years were filled with vibrant experiences, including active involvement in Kappa Delta sorority, where she attended social gatherings and devoted time to philanthropic events—moments that helped shape her love for community and leadership. (Go Huskies!)

Julie’s professional story began on the shores of South Lake Union, where she spent just over two years at a boutique Public Relations firm. While she thrived in the fast-paced PR environment, Julie soon realized her heart was set on a career that combined her love of travel, helping others, and making a tangible difference. In 2013, Julie took a leap and joined Alaska Airlines as a Flight Attendant, initially based in Los Angeles. 

Julie’s commitment to service quickly found an outlet, in 2014 she began volunteering on the Seattle Reserve Committee as a Reserve Buddy. In this mentorship role, Julie welcomed and supported new reserve Flight Attendants, sharing her insights and easing their transitions. In 2018, she was selected as the Seattle Reserve Committee Chairperson—a role in which she fostered a supportive environment for her SEA peers. Julie’s AFA journey continued to blossom in 2020, Julie was appointed to serve her first term as the MEC Reserve Committee Chairperson. Her impact grew further; in 2020 she joined the Seattle Grievance Committee as a Grievance Committee Member. In her new role as Grievance Committee Payroll Representative, she hopes to create enhanced training workshops and peer support resources, making the often-challenging pay system more accessible for all.

When Julie isn’t soaring at 35,000 feet, she’s spending time with her family and friends. She and her husband love introducing their young son, Brooks, to the wonders of the world—along with their two mischievous chocolate Labradors, Herman and Hazel. Julie’s circle of friends and family is her anchor, and she cherishes every moment spent at home or abroad. 

Orna Samuelly, MEC Grievance Committee Payroll Representative

Orna Samuelly is joining the Grievance Committee as a Payroll Representative. A transplanted New Yorker, Orna now calls Seattle home. She holds a BA from Williams College and an MA from Brown University.   Orna’s passion for the airline industry started years back at American Airlines and Northwest Airlines in Revenue Management. After years in consulting and financial management, she found her way back to the industry she loves.   

Orna volunteered to join the Grievance Committee as a Payroll Representative to apply her analytical skills to support fellow Flight Attendants. She also volunteers as the Treasurer on the Board of Purrfect Pals, a Washington cat shelter, and at the Seattle Aquarium, where she loves teaching people about the Giant Pacific Octopus and inspiring them to protect our amazing oceans.   

Orna is excited to support fellow Flight Attendants with their payroll issues, whether to right wrongs or to understand the contract clauses that have impacted their payroll.   Orna has been a Flight Attendant for the last 3 years. She is having fun with it, most of the time, treating it as an adventure, both in the air and on layovers. Discovering Alaska has been a treat, from fabulous hikes in Sitka and Juneau to encountering the big brown bears of Katmai.   

David Jelinek, MEC Uniform Committee Chairperson

David was born and raised on a ranch in a small town in southern Colorado. He attended the University of Northern Colorado and obtained a degree in Costume Design for Theater. He began his career as a flight attendant in 2005 with Frontier Airlines, which is based in Denver. During that time, he served on the Uniform Committee for five years. In 2007, he moved to Portland for love, which, after twenty years, is still going strong. 

In 2013, he began flying for Alaska Airlines. After a bit of coaxing, he joined the Uniform Committee, and in 2017, he took over the position of the Local Uniform Committee Chairperson for Council 39 and the PDX base. David also serves on the Air Safety, Health, and Security Committee (ASHSC), where he has addressed safety concerns in our work environment and performed evacuation drills and proving flights for the FAA on the Airbus and new Boeing MAX aircraft. 

When not flying, David creates gowns and costumes for stage and drag performers. Halloween is a frenzy when he enters his stress-out period to create his costume to top the year before. When not spending time in the air or his sewing room, he enjoys RV camping with his husband, projects on their house, and walks around the neighborhood with their Schnauzer, Baxter. 

After 20 years of flying and five uniforms, David is excited to take on the position of MEC Uniform Committee Chairperson. He is committed to working hard to address Flight Attendant concerns and advocate for a professional, safe, and comfortable uniform for all.  

Pre-Merger Alaska MEC Committee Election Results

This message is for pre-merger Alaska Flight Attendants

During this week’s MEC Meeting, our MEC held interviews for the first group of pre-merger Alaska MEC Committee positions to be elected for the upcoming MEC Officer term. We want to thank everyone who expressed interest in the available positions and their willingness to serve. After careful consideration and deliberation, the following candidates have been elected:

MEC Grievance Committee Chairperson: Stephanie Adams
MEC Grievance Committee Assistant: Bianca Dew
MEC Grievance Committee Payroll Representatives: Julie Thornton, Orna Samuelly
MEC Uniform Committee Chairperson: David Jelinek

These newly elected MEC Committee Chairpersons and Representatives will carry out their respective roles specific to our six pre-merger Alaska Local Councils as we continue to navigate the merger process. They’ll begin the transition into their roles over the next few months, with their official term beginning on January 1, 2026. They will serve for the upcoming MEC Officer election cycle from January 1, 2026, to December 31, 2028.

On Thursday, August 14, the AFA Local Uniform Committee Chairpersons met to discuss their ongoing work to represent Flight Attendants and push for improvements in the workplace. Representing you at the meeting were Kim Mazzolini (ANC), Dena Heath (SEA), David Jelinek (PDX), Lisa Mueller (SFO), Heather Holmes (LAX), JP Perina (SAN). Horizon AFA MEC Uniform Committee Chairperson Norann Mann and MEC Uniform Committee Chairperson Kiara Jenkins were also present.

The committee also met with Interim Senior Product Manager Marketing Ann McCurties, Senior Product Manager Marketing Megan Low, Supply Chain Program Manager Lizzie Revard, PDX Inflight Base Manager Kristie Stafford, and SFO Inflight Base Manager Cierra Lewis.

The next Quarterly Uniform Committee Meeting will be held on Thursday, November 6.

Topics of Discussion 

The committee reviewed several topics both during internal AFA-only conversation and when meeting with management. Some items discussed include:

  • The 2026 Uniform Committee Quarterly Meetings dates are as follows: February 19, May 7, August 13, and November 5.  
  • A uniform issue reporting form to be located on the IMD has been approved by IT. Management will continue to collaborate with IT and will provide updates on testing and launch dates as they become available.  
  • Additional Phase 2 uniform focus groups are tentatively scheduled for October.  
  • The second round of Request for Proposal (RFP) meetings with various labor groups took place this month. The primary focus was on evaluating the potential manufacturers surveyed as candidates. Discussion also included the transition to Phase 2 (production) elements, such as cut & sew, safety (fire-resistant material), and fabric.  
  • Flight Attendants should not be charged for wings. If you have been charged, please contact management to arrange for a refund.  
  • Alisa Onishi from Hawaiian Airlines is leading the new uniform program. Please direct all new uniform inquiries and discussions to her. Current uniform issues will continue to be handled by the existing management personnel who attend the quarterly meetings.  
  • The Committee has requested that the Copper River vest be approved for use when flying within the state of Alaska. Management will review this request.  
  • With boot season approaching, please review the boot guidelines. If you would like to seek pre-approval before purchasing your boot wear, please email kristie.stafford@alaskaair.com.  
  • For those interested in purchasing Arctic boots and receiving reimbursement through a deduction from your uniform allotment, please refer to section 13.D.1 of the contract for more information.

What The Committee Is Working On

  1. Arctic Stuff Sack: Management will revisit a Unisync test sack that was initially thought to be too bulky, but may ultimately fit the needs due to the size of the parka.
  2. Quarter Zip Cardigan: The Committee noticed these pieces have been removed from the uniform subsite. Some sizes have completely sold out, and when they do, there will not be a restock. Management will work with Unisync to return the remaining sizes to the subsite so Flight Attendants can order them until stock is depleted.
  3. Pantyhose: The Committee continues to advocate for less expensive or discounted options, as the price and difficulty of finding pantyhose (especially navy ones) have increased.

Representing you at the meeting were Kim Mazzolini (ANC), Dena Heath (SEA), David Jelinek (PDX), Lisa Mueller (SFO), Heather Holmes (LAX), JP Perina (SAN). Horizon AFA MEC Uniform Committee Chairperson Norann Mann and MEC Uniform Committee Chairperson Kiara Jenkins were also present.

The committee also met with Interim Senior Product Manager Marketing Ann McCurties, Supply Chain Program Manager Lizzie Revard, PDX Inflight Base Manager Kristie Stafford, and SFO Inflight Base Manager Cierra Lewis.

The next Quarterly Uniform Committee Meeting will be held on Thursday, August 14.

Topics of Discussion 

The committee reviewed several topics both during internal AFA-only conversation and when meeting with management. Some items discussed include:

  • Uniform Guidelines and Updates
    • As of May 12, management has started progressive disciplinary steps for uniform violations. 
    • If management discusses a uniform violation with you, they must inform you that it is being documented as a Record of Discussion (ROD) and follow the proper procedures. 
    • If a Flight Attendant has concerns after receiving an ROD, please contact your LEC President or Local Grievance Committee.
  • A special bulletin released on April 18 states that the combination of the quarter-zip sweater and summer shirt is not allowed. The updated uniform style chart reflects this change.
  • Current Open Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Item:
    • Issues regarding exchange settlements and reimbursement denials: Management acknowledges there is no time limit for uniform repairs. However, they claim they are not obligated to repair uniforms that were traded, swapped, or lack a Unisync order history. AFA disagrees, noting that there has been a longstanding practice of trading and swapping uniforms, and the contract does not exempt these situations.
  • Current Closed ADR Item:
    • Hairstyles based on federally protected classes: Flight attendants may submit a reasonable accommodation request for uniform guidelines. Examples of federally protected uniform violations that can be addressed through this request (though not exhaustive) include:
      • Head coverings such as hijabs, tichels, African headwraps, and kipahs;
      • Jewelry such as Indian bangles, Tibetan/Buddhist mala beads and bracelets, Catholic rosaries/Saint medals, crucifixes, crosses, Star of David necklaces/bracelets, Native American turquoise, and Māori/Meso American/East Asian/Egyptian jade;
      • Hairstyles such as Native Alaskan/American mohawks and Sikh hair; 
      • Cultural tattoos such as Ta moko, Tatau, Mandala, Sak Yant, Irezumi, African scarification/fraternal branding, Mehndi, Batok/Batek/Patik/Batik, and kākau.
    • Please remember that to make a request, you must be part of one of the following federally protected classes regarding your request: race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, childbirth, and associated medical conditions), gender identity, sexual orientation, national origin, age (40 and over), disability (mental or physical), genetic information, veteran status, marital status, and ancestry.
  • Open Requests Made to Management:
    • Development of a Uniform App on IMD that allows reporting issues and accessing policies/style guides.
  • Requests Made for Merged Uniforms/Dual Branding:
    • “Off the neck” apron style.
    • Small hoop-style nose rings.
    • Year-round boot options.
    • Better-fitting pants.
    • Making hosiery optional.
    • Hooded transition jacket.
    • More breathable fabric options.
    • Making the transition jacket compliant with all uniform pieces.
    • Introducing a cape/wrap/coat to be worn during boarding or on red-eye flights for added warmth.
    • A less restrictive accessory policy regarding watch band colors, nail polish colors, designs, etc.
    • Easier access to alterations.
    • Providing photos of models alongside their sizes for each piece to assist Flight Attendants in finding the right fit.
    • Option for a wrap dress.
    • An added summer shirt option that is not tropical-themed.
    • A longer torso design for the summer shirt option (especially for the Aura cut).
    • Collared and tailored shirts that can be worn untucked.
    • A waterproof trench coat with a usable hood.
    • Expanding shoe color options for dresses and skirts, as compliant navy shoes are difficult to find.
  • For those with sensitive skin, the retractable lanyard is a uniform-compliant option, provided you wear a Oneworld pin. 
  • Lanyards have been restocked and are available at all bases. You may request a lanyard at any base, regardless of your home base location.
  • If you do not have original company-issued luggage, you may use your personal luggage; however, it must be approved by a supervisor. Please email your supervisor for approval.
  • The Aura Blazer and Aura dress will not be reordered. Once the current stock is sold out, they will no longer be available for order.

What The Committee Is Working On

  1. Arctic Stuff Sack: Sourcing a suitable stuff sack has proven difficult, but it remains a priority on our agenda.
  2. Updated Uniform Links: The Committee noticed several broken or inaccurate links on the Uniform subsite. All links have now been updated, including the most recent alterations guidelines.
  3. Hemlines: If you have already ordered the “tall” size and your hemline is still not compliant, please contact your Local Uniform Committee Chairperson for assistance.
