Aloha Seattle,
We wanted to address a few issues that have recently come up. Please take a few moments to review the information below and reach out if you have any questions, concerns, or need additional clarification.
We understand this is a significant amount of information, but we encourage you to read through it carefully and share these updates with your flying partners. Keeping one another informed helps ensure we are all aware of our contractual rights, current issues, and available resources.
Mahalo for your continued engagement and support.

ER Domicile Rest
AFA has received several questions regarding domicile rest requirements when a flight’s actual block time exceeds its scheduled flight time, particularly on London Heathrow (LHR) pairings.
Under our Contract Section 7.D.2.a.(1)-(2), domicile rest is determined by the scheduled flight time, not the actual flight time flown in operation. Scheduled flight time refers to the flight time published in the bid packet.
For example, LHR pairings are currently scheduled less than ten (10) hours of flight time. Therefore, upon returning to domicile, these pairings are subject to the contractual rest requirement applicable to flights scheduled under ten (10) hours, which is twenty-four (24) hours of domicile rest.
Even if actual operations result in the flight exceeding ten (10) hours, the domicile rest requirement does not change because the Contract bases the rest calculation on the scheduled flight time.
If a Flight Attendant elects to schedule themselves with back-to-back Extended Range (ER) pairings with less than one additional hour of rest above the contractual minimum, the Company may reduce the required domicile rest by up to 1.5 hours in actual operations.
- A Flight Attendant requiring 24 hours of domicile rest who schedules themselves between 24 and 25 hours of rest
- A Flight Attendant requiring 36 hours of domicile rest who schedules themselves between 36 and 37 hours of rest
If a Flight Attendant schedules themselves with at least one additional hour of domicile rest above the contractual minimum between back-to-back Extended Range (ER) pairings, and operational delays reduce their rest below the contractual minimum, the Flight Attendant must be removed from the second ER pairing and will receive pay and credit protection for the trip missed.
EXAMPLES:
- Example 1: A bid Flight Attendant schedules her/himself with back-to-back ER pairings with 24:45 rest between the pairings. The minimum rest requirement after the first pairing is 24 hours. The first trip’s return to SEA is delayed by one (1) hour, which reduces the rest between the two pairings to 23:45. Because the Flight Attendant originally scheduled her/himself below 25:00 rest between the ER pairings (the minimum ER rest of 24:00, plus one (1) hour), she or he will not be removed from the second ER pairing because her/his rest may be reduced to 22:30.
- Example 2: A bid Flight Attendant schedules her/himself with back-to-back ER pairings with 25:00 rest between the pairings. The minimum rest requirement after the first pairing is 24 hours. The first trip’s return to SEA is delayed by one hour and fifteen minutes (1:15), which reduces the rest between the two pairings to 23:45. Because the Flight Attendant originally scheduled her/himself with 25:00 rest between the two ER pairings (the minimum ER rest of 24:00, plus one (1) hour), she/he will be removed from the second ER pairing and pay protected because her/his rest was subsequently reduced below 24:00.

FCO Per Diem
It has come to our attention that Flight Attendants who operated FCO pairings may not have received the full per diem amount. Payroll has been notified, and your Council 47 Officers are working with the company to ensure an appropriate remedy is identified.
At this time, there is no need to individually contact Payroll, as this appears to be a system-wide issue affecting all Flight Attendants who operated these trips. Please stand by for an update, which we anticipate providing by the end of this week.
As a reminder, current per diem rates can be found on the IFS website (using your Hawaiian log-in) under the Crew Scheduling tab at the very bottom if using a mobile device, on the right side if using a desktop. Per diem rates are subject to change and may vary from month to month, so we encourage all Flight Attendants to regularly verify that they are being paid correctly for the trips they fly.
For foreign destinations, per diem is paid from block-in at the foreign destination until block-out from that destination [Section 4.A.3]. We recommend reviewing your pay records to ensure the appropriate amount was credited.
Italian Speaker Sign-in Position
We have received inquiries regarding whether Italian Language (IT) Flight Attendants are required to occupy specific positions on the aircraft when signing in.
Unlike our Asia Language Flight Attendants, Italian Language Flight Attendants are not restricted to designated positions. Italian Language Flight Attendants may sign into any position their seniority allows them to hold, consistent with the normal sign-in process.
Z-Block (Crew Rest Seats)
We have received reports that designated crew rest seats have been assigned to passengers on flights that were not fully booked. This is a contractual violation and has been addressed with management.
The Labor Relations Department met with Airport Operations and identified the source of the issue. The automated system is not currently recognizing the crew rest seat z-blocks, requiring a manual process to protect those seats. The company has advised that this manual process is an interim solution while a more permanent fix is pursued.
If you encounter a flight that is not fully booked and designated crew rest seats have been assigned to passengers, please politely advise the gate agents of our contractual right to those seats (Section 7.D.2.f). Our crew rest seats on a flight not fully booked should be last sold/last assigned. We also ask that you document the occurrence by submitting an Intelex report in addition to emailing your officers (47@afahawaiian.org) so we can continue tracking the issue and ensuring compliance.
