        2022 AFA September 11th Honor Guard

        Twenty-one years ago, we made a promise to Never Forget the events of September 11, 2001 and never allow them to be repeated. No matter the uniform we wear, the routes we fly, or the years we have worn our wings we will always remember the events of September 11th and lift up our heroes. 

        Our seventh annual AFA Honor Guard will attend services at our nation’s three national memorials to ensure the public remembers the sacrifice of Flight Attendants. This Honor Guard is comprised of Flight Attendants who have done work to advance our Never Forget priorities.

        Reserve Committee Meeting Recap – 3rd Quarter 2022

        Our AFA Reserve Committee Chairpersons met on Thursday, September 8 to discuss their ongoing program of work to represent and advocate for our Reserve Flight Attendants.  The Committee also met with management to review a number of specific concerns that were brought forward by Flight Attendants.  Your Local Reserve Committee is available to answer questions, provide clarification, or help to resolve any reserve related issues.  Please don’t hesitate to reach out!

        Election Notice: Alaska MEC Officer Elections

        The term of office for our current Master Executive Council (MEC) Officers will conclude on December 31, 2022.  The voting members of the MEC (LEC Presidents) will elect new MEC Officers at the regular November MEC meeting.  This communication serves as notice of the election in accordance with article III.C.1 of the MEC Policy Manual.

        Uniform Gender Expression Survey

        Everyone should be able to dress and express themselves at work in a manner that is reflective of their true self.  AFA is working with other aviation unions and PRIDE@Work to ensure that all Flight Attendants are supported in exercising our rights.  Your participation in the Uniform Gender Expression Survey will help to identify where discrimination exists and improvements to uniform choices, policies, and guidelines need to be made.

        Proportional Domicile Staffing

        The AFA Alaska MEC sent a letter to Alaska Airlines management last week advocating for growing each domicile proportionally via vacancy awards and new hire domicile assignments through 2023.  We have all read and heard “we appreciate you” and “we care” in one form or another, but management must now demonstrate its values to do the right thing by turning those words into action.  Management acknowledged receipt of the MEC’s letter and indicated they will respond early this week.

        AFA Alaska Online Support Center Outage

        As we initially reported last Thursday, August 18, we are continuing to experience an outage to the AFA Alaska Online Support Center.  Though we were initially advised by our hosting provider that the issue would resolve within 48 hours, that has not been the case and the website remains inoperable.  The issue has been escalated with our hosting provider and we are continuing to monitor their progress.  Unfortunately, we do not have an estimated time that the website will return to operation.

        Our AFA Scheduling Committee Chairpersons met on Tuesday, August 23 to discuss their ongoing program of work to represent Flight Attendants interests related to lineholder scheduling.  The Committee also met with management to receive updates and discuss issues and problems that Flight Attendants are experiencing with scheduling, pairings, and bidding.  Your Local Scheduling Committee is available to answer questions, provide clarification, or help to resolve any lineholder scheduling-related issues.  Please don’t hesitate to reach out!

        AFA Alaska Online Support Back Online

        We are pleased to report that the AFA Alaska Online Support Center (support.afaalaska.org) is now back online and fully operational.  AFA representatives have started the process of reviewing outstanding tickets that were filed prior to the outage occurring last Thursday, August 18.  If you filed a ticket prior to August 18th or after the system came back online today, your patience is greatly appreciated as our AFA volunteers begin to work through the backlog.

        Hotel Committee Meeting Recap – 3rd Quarter 2022

        Our AFA Hotel Committee Chairpersons met on Thursday, August 12 to discuss their ongoing program of work to protect and improve the quality of Flight Attendant hotel accommodations and ground transportation providers.  The Committee met with representatives from management and the Company’s crew accommodations vendor to review current trends and concerns related to layover hotels and transportation.  More than ever, the Committee needs your help in reporting hotel and transportation concerns through CrewCare.  Issues that are reported through CrewCare provide the Committee with important data to drive change with management.

        TAKE ACTION: Demand No Stock Buybacks

        COVID relief legislation temporarily prohibited airlines from using stock buybacks that enrich executives and big investors on the backs of workers and consumers. But those prohibitions end on September 30.

        Now is not the time to start sending cash to Wall Street when the airlines can’t yet meet public demand or manage effectively through operational challenges. Airline workers have had contract negotiations on hold for years – delaying raises and improving working conditions needed to keep skilled workers on the job and attract new applicants.

        We call on all airline CEOs to take the No Stock Buybacks Pledge!

        Solidarity is the key to our success in upcoming contract negotiations.  Keeping others informed and involved in the process is the role of our Mobilization Committee and Mobilization Volunteers.  Mobilization Volunteers are responsible for sharing negotiations news and information, gathering feedback, and encouraging other Flight Attendants to take action to support our Negotiating Committee.  If you’re interested in getting involved as a Mobilization Volunteer, fill out an expression of interest form today.  If you want to know more, get in touch with your Local Mobilization Committee Chairperson.

        AFA Alaska Online Support Center Outage

        At around 6 PM Pacific time this evening (Thursday, August 18) the AFA Alaska Online Support Center at support.afaalaska.org went offline due to an issue with our hosting provider. We are currently working to resolve the issue but have been advised that it may take up to 48 hours to restore the system. As long as the system is down, please email your LEC Officers directly if you have an issue to report to AFA.

        🚨 REMINDER 🚨 Less than 24 hours left to take our negotiations survey!  The survey closes tomorrow (Friday, August 19) at 12 PM Pacific time.

        Our Negotiating Committee needs your feedback!  As of today, 54% of Flight Attendants have taken our negotiations survey.  Check in with your flying partners and reach out to your Alaska Flight Attendant friends to make sure they’ve taken the survey!  Text, call, email, video chat—get in touch with as many people as you can and ask them to make sure they have their voice heard!

        Contract negotiations with management are set to begin just over a month from today.  As our Negotiating Committee gears up to go to the table with management, a number of activities are taking place to help support their work.  Our Negotiations Survey is underway, preparatory work has started on our AFA opening proposal to management, and our Mobilization Committee is looking for Mobilization Volunteers to back our Negotiating Committee.  Looking for even more information about negotiations and what to expect?  Our Contract 2022 website is your one-stop resource for everything you need to know!

        August 2022 MEC Meeting Recap

        Our AFA Alaska Master Executive Council (MEC) met this week on Thursday, August 11 to conduct their ongoing work to represent our Flight Attendants.  The MEC also met with executive management and a group of union leaders from other company workgroups to receive updates and discuss concerns affecting employees company-wide.  The next Regular MEC Meeting is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, September 13 and Wednesday, September 14.  Please don’t hesitate to reach out to your LEC President if you have any questions.
