        Air Safety, Health, & Security Committee Meeting Recap – 2nd Quarter 2023

        Our AFA Air Safety, Health, & Security Committee (ASHSC) Chairpersons met on Thursday, April 5 to discuss their ongoing program of work to represent Flight Attendants interests related to safety, health, and security in our workplace. The Committee also met with management to receive updates and discuss issues and problems that Flight Attendants are facing onboard the aircraft. Reporting safety concerns is more important than ever given the challenges we are currently facing as a workgroup.  Flight Attendant Irregularity Reports (FAIR), Aviation Safety Action Reports (ASAP), and fatigue reports can all be filed through Report It!  Please contact a member of your Local ASHSC if you need assistance.

        April 2023 MEC Meeting Recap

        Our AFA Alaska Master Executive Council (MEC) met this week on Tuesday, April 11, to conduct their ongoing work to represent our Flight Attendants. As part of the meeting, the MEC met with members of inflight, crew planning, and labor relations management to discuss issues and concerns that are facing our work group and need to be addressed. The next Regular MEC Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 9. Please don’t hesitate to contact your LEC President if you have any questions.

        Our Negotiating Committee tentatively agreed to Sections 8 (Hours of Service), 10.A through Q (Scheduling), 15 (Leaves of Absence), 27 (General Association), and three letters of agreement (LOAs), increasing the total to 32 out of 45 sections. Of the remaining sections, 5 are being discussed, 5 are currently tabled, and 3 remain. The next negotiation session is from April 18 through 20th.

The Committee also met with management to receive updates on what progress has been made on concerns that had been previously brought forward and address new concerns that have come to light.         Washington State Legislature Declines to Advance State Bill 5725

        Yesterday, the Washington State House Labor and Workplace Standards Committee declined to advance WA State Bill (SB) 5725 (“Clarifying the application of the industrial welfare act and minimum wage act to airline cabin crews”) out of committee. This action effectively killed the bill for the 2023-2024 legislative session.

        Management solicited AFA’s support for WA SB 5725 in the context of contract negotiations, and the MEC ultimately agreed after careful consideration. Our Negotiating Committee subsequently secured an agreement for near-term implementation of onboard rest breaks and a tentative agreement on Paid Sick Leave (PSL) provisions. The failure of WA SB 5725 to advance out of committee may have some effect on negotiations.

        Management-mandated Tentative Agreement completion date extended past April. Prior agreement on Top of Industry Pay extended. Time spent addressing compliance with state laws within the CBA redirected bargaining time, leading to the need for the schedule extension.

        Our Negotiating Committee began discussing Sections 15 (Leaves of Absence), 27 (General – Association), and 30 (Training). Tentative agreement was reached on LOA 5 (Sick Family/Sick Child), increasing the total to 29 sections. The Committee is currently discussing 13 open sections and 3 sections remain. The next negotiation session is April 4th through 6th.

        EAP/Professional Standards Committee News – March 2023

        Our AFA EAP/Professional Standards Committee (Members helping Members) seeks to assist Members, their families, and partners experiencing personal and work-related problems that could or are affecting their health and well-being on and off the job. Our EAP committee is a Union-sponsored support service provided by Flight Attendants for Flight Attendants, their families, and partners. EAP Peer Representatives are trained to provide three distinct but interrelated services: Assessment, Support, and Referral Services; Professional Standards; and Critical Incident Response.

The BOD meeting is where business affecting all AFA airlines is conducted. Your LEC President is your representative at the BOD meeting and will be voting on your behalf regarding the approval of the AFA International budget.         FAA Reauthorization Bill 

        Our AFA Government Affairs Committee met with their representatives on Capitol Hill and urged them to pass the FAA Reauthorization Bill. This bill will improve aviation safety and conditions onboard the aircraft for flight crew and passengers. Top priorities discussed with Congress include cabin air safety, and stopping disruptive passenger abuse towards crew members and gate agents.
