Crew Access Frustrations

Changes to how trips are posted and displayed in Crew Access and other ongoing system issues have resulted in concerns about contractual violations and a lack of management accountability. Management must provide a functional system that works correctly and has agreed to troubleshoot the current issues and review programming changes to Crew Access. AFA Representatives will continue protecting Flight Attendant interests and contractual rights through all legal means available to us, including the grievance process as applicable.

Join The Fight To End Trans Genocide

Our CWA Pride Caucus launched a petition on March 31st—International Transgender Day of Visibility. The goal of the petition is to have a statement read in the House and the Senate about the reality that trans people in America are in Stage 7 of a genocide. Stage 8 is when large scale round ups and exterminations begin. Any observer of the history of human rights crimes will tell you the situation is well past terrifying.

Negotiation Session 13

We are close to tentatively agreeing on Sections 16: Sick Leave/On the Job Injury and 32: Attendance Policy, which will increase the total agreements to 34 out of 45 sections. Of the remaining sections, 5 are being discussed, 5 are currently tabled, and 3 remain. The next negotiation session is May 9-11.

Air Safety, Health, & Security Committee Meeting Recap – 2nd Quarter 2023

Our AFA Air Safety, Health, & Security Committee (ASHSC) Chairpersons met on Thursday, April 5 to discuss their ongoing program of work to represent Flight Attendants interests related to safety, health, and security in our workplace. The Committee also met with management to receive updates and discuss issues and problems that Flight Attendants are facing onboard the aircraft. Reporting safety concerns is more important than ever given the challenges we are currently facing as a workgroup.  Flight Attendant Irregularity Reports (FAIR), Aviation Safety Action Reports (ASAP), and fatigue reports can all be filed through Report It!  Please contact a member of your Local ASHSC if you need assistance.

April 2023 MEC Meeting Recap

Our AFA Alaska Master Executive Council (MEC) met this week on Tuesday, April 11, to conduct their ongoing work to represent our Flight Attendants. As part of the meeting, the MEC met with members of inflight, crew planning, and labor relations management to discuss issues and concerns that are facing our work group and need to be addressed. Our Negotiating Committee tentatively agreed to Sections 8 (Hours of Service), 10.A through Q (Scheduling), 15 (Leaves of Absence), 27 (General Association), and three letters of agreement (LOAs), increasing the total to 32 out of 45 sections. Of the remaining sections, 5 are being discussed, 5 are currently tabled, and 3 remain. The next negotiation session is from April 18 through 20th.

Our AFA Human Rights Committee Chairpersons met on Friday, March 24, to discuss their ongoing program of work to advance human rights within our workplace and community. The Committee also met with management to receive updates on what progress has been made on concerns that had been previously brought forward and address new concerns that have come to light. Washington State Legislature Declines to Advance State Bill 5725

Yesterday, the Washington State House Labor and Workplace Standards Committee declined to advance WA State Bill (SB) 5725 (“Clarifying the application of the industrial welfare act and minimum wage act to airline cabin crews”) out of committee. This action effectively killed the bill for the 2023-2024 legislative session.

Negotiations And Washington State Bill 5725 2023-2024

Management solicited AFA’s support for WA SB 5725 in the context of contract negotiations, and the MEC ultimately agreed after careful consideration. Our Negotiating Committee subsequently secured an agreement for near-term implementation of onboard rest breaks and a tentative agreement on Paid Sick Leave (PSL) provisions. The failure of WA SB 5725 to advance out of committee may have some effect on negotiations.

Management-mandated Tentative Agreement completion date extended past April. Prior agreement on Top of Industry Pay extended. Time spent addressing compliance with state laws within the CBA redirected bargaining time, leading to the need for the schedule extension.

Negotiation Session 11

Our Negotiating Committee began discussing Sections 15 (Leaves of Absence), 27 (General – Association), and 30 (Training). Tentative agreement was reached on LOA 5 (Sick Family/Sick Child), increasing the total to 29 sections. The Committee is currently discussing 13 open sections and 3 sections remain. The next negotiation session is April 4th through 6th.

Joint Contract Negotiations Session 15 – June 2026

The JNC has been actively negotiating key sections of the contract, focusing on vacation, sick leave, and temporary duty assignments. A tentative agreement was reached on Section 37 (Temporary Duty Assignments), ensuring financial protections and fair treatment for Flight Attendants during temporary assignments. These ongoing discussions demonstrate a commitment to integrating the best benefits from both Alaska and Hawaiian CBAs for all members.
