Negotiations Update June 19, 2014: Draft Opening Proposal Completed

        June 19, 2014 20:19

        Dear Flight Attendants,

Your Negotiating Committee just wrapped up two days of successful internal meetings in Seattle, WA. We used this time to craft an opening proposal based on your indications in the follow-up negotiations survey. We will publish an executive summary of the survey by the end of next week.

The new Negotiating Committee will attend an intensive negotiations training next week along with the entire Master Executive Council (MEC).  As part of the training, the Negotiating Committee will present the opening proposal to the MEC for approval per Section VI.B.3.c of the AFA-CWA Constitution & Bylaws.

We head back to mediated talks with management under the jurisdiction of the National Mediation Board in Washington, DC, July 8-9.  In that meeting we will present our proposal for a new contract and advocate for the positions you voiced in the survey.

What can you do in the meantime to strengthen our position at the table? We are on the countdown to 100% RED so make sure to wear your RED AFA pin on your uniform! Don’t have one yet? Contact your local Mobilization chairperson: afaalaska.org/mobilization.

        In solidarity,

Your Negotiating Committee—MEC President Jeffrey Peterson, Kristy Stratton, Lisa Pinkston, Jake Jones, Christina Frees and AFA Senior Staff Negotiator Paula Mastrangelo

MEC Update June 16, 2014: Probationary F/As May Wear the Red AFA Pin

        June 16, 2014 10:58

        Dear Flight Attendants,

Be advised that probationary Flight Attendants are absolutely welcome and encouraged to wear the new RED AFA pin. The RED AFA pin is our official union pin at Alaska Airlines so there is no need to wear the white pin. Alaska Airlines management has confirmed the right by all Flight Attendants—including probationary F/As—to wear the RED AFA pin. Even very recently, AFA was distributing the white AFA pins to probationary F/As during Initial Training and instructing them to not wear the RED AFA pins. We apologize for the confusion!

Probationary Flight Attendants are completely covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement in all ways except the right to utilize the grievance process. Probationary F/As are technically allowed to participate in solidarity actions as allowed under the Railway Labor Act (RLA). However, the Master Executive Council (MEC) believes our newest Flight Attendants can best support the negotiations process by wearing their RED AFA pin, familiarizing themselves with the Contract and most importantly focusing on successfully completing probation.

In the meantime the MEC invites probationary Flight Attendants to stay informed by attending union meetings. More RED AFA pins have been ordered and are on their way! Contact one of your Mobilization Committee chairpersons for more information: alaskamec.org/mobilization.

        In solidarity,

Your MEC—Jeffrey Peterson, Brian Palmer, Yvette Gesch, Becky Strachan, Laura Masserant, Cathy Gwynn, Sandra Morrow and Stephen Couckuyt

Negotiations Update June 13, 2014: Negotiations Now in Early July!

        June 13, 2014 18:23

        Dear Flight Attendants,

The first meeting in our second round of mediation has been rescheduled from the week of July 21st in San Francisco, CA, to an earlier date in July! We will now be meeting the week of July 7th at the National Mediation Board (NMB) in Washington, DC.

        Negotiations Calendar

June 17-18: Negotiating Committee writes second round opening proposal – Seattle, WA

June 24-25: Negotiating Committee, MEC, AFA International staff and NMB members meet for negotiations training – Seattle, WA

July 8-9: Negotiations – NMB, Washington, DC

July 22: Solidarity Event (details TBA) [see alaskamec.org/mobilization]

Week of August 25 (tentative): Negotiations – location TBD

We return to the table in a few weeks with renewed energy.  What can you do in the meantime? Continue to be informed and participate in your local AFA meetings and solidarity events.

Not only that but you can wear the new RED AFA pin each and every day to show your support for your Negotiating Committee. Management must see an ocean of RED pins on the line, which will reinforce our negotiations leverage. When they look across the bargaining table, they must see 3,200 of us looking back!

        In solidarity,

Your Negotiating Committee—MEC President Jeffrey Peterson, Kristy Stratton, Lisa Pinkston, Jake Jones, Christina Frees and AFA Senior Staff Negotiator Paula Mastrangelo

MEC Update June 3, 2014: Support Your 2014 Drill Teams!

        June 3, 2014 20:21

        Dear Flight Attendants,

The Master Executive Council (MEC) has grown concerned over comments on social media directed at our Portland Rose Festival Grand Floral Parade and Seattle SeaFair Torchlight Parade Drill Team members. In the past several years the MEC has not taken a position either way regarding a Flight Attendant’s choice to volunteer for a Company-sponsored event. In light the fact that Flight Attendants are sharing negative discussions on social media regarding the Drill Team, the MEC is changing its stance.

Many Flight Attendants are desiring to participate in the Drill Team but they also want to show their solidarity with AFA. Your MEC, management and the Drill Team organizers have committed to making both possible at the same time. The Drill Team will be proudly displaying the new RED AFA pins on their uniforms and special RED “AFA/Alaska Airlines Drill Team 2014” bag tags on their suitcases during the parades.

Consequently, the MEC encourages interested Flight Attendants to volunteer for the Drill Team. Flight Attendants on the Drill Team should experience the same level of support as any other co-worker wearing the uniform.

For the rest of our Flight Attendants, we invite you to come out to the parades and support our Drill Team volunteers! Stay tuned for more opportunities to demonstrate your solidarity in the near future!

As we move into the next round of negotiations, this is a reminder that management is watching and they have called in Flight Attendants for social media posts. If negative comments are directed to any employee reflect unfavorably on the Company you could receive a call from your performance supervisor. Don’t let this happen to you!

        In solidarity,

Your MEC — Jeffrey Peterson, Brian Palmer, Yvette Gesch, Becky Strachan, Laura Masserant, Cathy Gwynn, Sandra Morrow and Stephen Couckuyt

        Unsanctioned Video on Social Media

        May 22, 2014 14:08

        May 22, 2014

        Dear Flight Attendants,

It has come to the attention of the Master Executive Council (MEC) that a video has been posted to social media. That video features a modified clip from Vice President of Inflight Services Andy Schneider’s interview with KTUU at the Alaska Air Group Shareholders Meeting on May 8th. It also contains one of AFA Alaska’s recent mobilization messages throughout and other statements about the interview and negotiations.

This video was not produced by AFA and is in no way sponsored or endorsed by AFA, your MEC or your Negotiating Committee. We believe the source video has since been taken down.

With the recent solidarity activities fresh on everyone’s mind and our RED Hot countdown underway, we understand that many of you are eager to engage in more collective action events. The Negotiating Committee has a strategic plan in place to leverage the power of our unified group as we return to negotiations in July.

Individual efforts that are conducted outside of our AFA mobilization campaigns could dilute our unified voice and have a detrimental effect on the success of the Negotiating Committee at the table. Additionally, discipline or perhaps even termination of employment could result from such activities.

Going forward if you have ideas for mobilization activities, email those suggestions to negotiations@alaskamec.org.

        In Solidarity,

Your MEC – Jeffrey Peterson, Brian Palmer, Yvette Gesch, Becky Strachan, Laura Masserant, Cathy Gwynn and Sandra Morrow; and

Your Negotiating Committee – MEC President Jeffrey Peterson, Kristy Stratton, Lisa Pinkston, Jake Jones, Christina Frees and AFA Senior Staff Negotiator Paula Mastrangelo
