[AS] Overhead Bin & Carry-on Bag Related Injuries Survey

This message is for pre-merger Alaska Flight Attendants

Your AFA ASHSC (Air Safety, Health and Security Committee) has been working for some time to find ways to address injuries attributed to push up style overhead bins and passengers carry-on bags.

With the encouragement and support of the ASHSC the company has been successful in getting Boeing to develop a lift assist mechanism for the Space Bins which the company is in the process of installing. This is helpful, but we know more needs to be done since push up style bins will be with us for the foreseeable future.

To that end we have partnered with Inflight Safety & Compliance and Alaska Air Group Safety to conduct a safety risk assessment of the boarding process focusing on overhead bins and carry-on bags.

To support that effort, we encourage all F/As who have been injured operating overhead bins or by handling or being struck by carry-on bags to fill out the anonymous survey sent out Friday in Andy’s What’s Happening. For convenience we have provided a link to that survey below.

Travel While on a Medical, Maternity, or Workers’ Compensation Leave of Absence

Our contract provides the ability to use on-line travel benefits while on a medical, maternity, or Workers’ Compensation leave of absence.  In order to use these travel benefits, you’re required to provide a doctor’s release that states that travel will not adversely affect your ability to return to active service.  This requirement is spelled out in section 15.J.1 of the contract:

A Flight Attendant on a leave of absence who wishes to secure on-line travel passes will coordinate such travel through Inflight management. In the case of a medical, maternity or Workers’ Compensation leave s/he must provide a doctors release specifying such travel will not adversely affect the Flight Attendant’s ability to return to active service. 

Due to the contractual requirement that you provide a doctor’s release in these instances, AFA recommends that you obtain a doctor’s release to travel when you go out on any of these types of leave if you intend to use your travel benefits and your doctor is comfortable providing such a release.

Hawaiian Flight Attendant Seattle Domicile Negotiations – March 2026 Update

Management currently requires Flight Attendants to provide proof of relocation to receive the flat-rate moving expense, a policy that the AFA is formally challenging through the grievance process. While this dispute is ongoing, Flight Attendants able to submit proof of relocation must submit two forms of documentation, such as a lease or updated driver’s license, within 60 days of transfer if they wish to be paid under management’s terms. The union continues to advocate for a fairer process and encourages members to keep records of all related interactions.

Joint Contract Negotiations Session 12 – February 2026

During this negotiation session, we made progress on Sections 15 (Leaves of Absence) and 22 (Expenses). The JNC advocated for positive developments from the Hawaiian CBA to strengthen our proposals. We also introduced our initial proposal for Section 28 (Domiciles) and remain committed to meaningful improvements in all areas of discussion.
