    Holiday Bidding Tips

    This holiday you may not hold your first choice in pairings and days off that you may desire at your seniority but that doesn’t mean you cannot try! There are many creative ways to bid in the holiday season that can set up your bid to ensure that if you have to work a date you do not desire, you are at least still asking for the kinds of pairings you do! The company forces coverage on Pairing and Reserve lines alike to ensure that the operation is covered and in holiday months this usually goes higher than normal in the seniority list.

    Hotel Committee Update

    With the holidays approaching please be ready for any hotel issues that may arise from the busy travel season.  Here are a few tips to remember:

    • Crewcare should be used to write up any hotel or transportation issues 
    • Call scheduling if hotel rooms aren’t available after 15 minutes of arrival
    • After inspecting your hotel room, close and lock your door immediately to prevent any employee from walking in unannounced
    • Be mindful of your surroundings when out and about on layovers.

    Reserve Reminders

    by the SFO Reserve Committee
    Reserve committee members have noticed recently that there might be some confusion about how line holders are paid when picking up Reserves days. Lineholders get a daily TFP of 5 TFP instead of how reserves are paid for a monthly guarantee of 90 TFP which is 5 TFP a day. 

    Example:

    If a line holder picked up a 2 day block of Reserve days and the first day they sat and the second day they worked an ANC turn they would be paid 5TFP for the day they sat and then 8TFP for the ANC turn they worked.

    New Committee Members

    Council 35 would like to send out a warm welcome to our newest volunteers!  Two members have stepped up to fill in the recently vacated Hotel Committee chair position and to join our Air Safety Health and Security Committee. Introductions are provided in their own words:


    ASHSC: Stephanie Garnett

    Stephanie started her career with Alaska Airlines in February of 1999.  She likes to refer to herself as a recycled FA having worked as a stewardess for Pan American World Airways back in the glory days.  As a member of the SEA ASHSC for many years,  she has earned 2 Soars awards.  In addition, Stephanie serves as the AFA MEC Inflight Service Committee Chairperson.  Safety is always paramount with any service decisions.  Becoming tired of Seattle weather Stephanie moved to Honolulu almost two years ago with her two Pixie Bob cats.  She has family on Oahu as well as the Bay area and enjoys spending time with them.  Stephanie would like to invite you to reach out with any safety concerns you might have and would be willing answer some service questions as well. She is pleased  to start a new chapter in her flying career by joining the SFO base and having the opportunity to be a member of the  SFO ASHSC.

    Hotel: Cassie Dole

    Cassie began her career in the airline industry over 15 years ago. Starting as a gate agent with JetBlue in 2004, she quickly realized her real drive was in being a flight attendant. After a year with United Airlines, she was hired on with Virgin America in 2007. She quickly transitioned to the training department, and it was there that she found her next role as instructor, preparing flight attendants for life out on the line. Being a part of the cadre team for Virgin America’s international flight certification solidified her love of international travel.  In 2010, she was able to partake in a crew exchange with Virgin Australia and was based in Sydney for a year. Traveling and overnight work trips are a passion of hers, she’s excited to channel that motivation, along with her desire to assist fellow flight attendants, in her new role. When not flying the line, Cassie can be found in the recurrent training office instructing, exploring local San Francisco restaurants, or traveling the world.

    Reserve Committee Opportunity

    Council 35 has a chair opening in the Reserve Committee.  Please review the duties and responsibilities which can be found on our website. If you are interested in volunteering, please submit a letter expressing your interest to sfo@afalaska.org.

    California Local Council Membership Meeting

    The next membership meeting for Council 35 members will be Thursday, November 18, 2021 at 1100 via Zoom. The purpose will be to discuss news and events happening in California bases at Alaska.  This meeting will be a combined council meeting and open to all Council 35 (SFO), 18 (LAX) and 15 (SAN) members in good standing (up-to-date on dues).  Deadline to submit agenda items is 11/15/21.  To attend, please register here.

    Year End Reminders

    Record Improvement

    JCBA § 32.G.4. Flight Attendants meeting the following conditions will have attendance points reduced to zero:

    • 4 or less attendance points at the end of the year
    • achieves 480 TFP for the year
    • does not accumulate any attendance points for the months of November and December

    The manual adjustment occurs mid-January which will be reflected on FAs attendance point records.

    PPP

    JCBA §21.R. November is the last of the collective block months in the Flight Attendant Productivity Premium Program (PPP).  Payout for the block months will be December 20th.  To see your accruals, please visit:

    How the First Amendment Applies in the Workplace

    Grievance Committee

    The Grievance Committee is hearing a lot of chatter from Flight Attendants believing they are exempt from discipline from harassment or discrimination due to their First Amendment rights of freedom of speech and freedom of religion.  We’d like to give a brief overview of how the Amendment actually affects one who works for a private employer such as Alaska Airlines.

    The First Amendment of the United States Constitution prevents the government from making laws which regulate an establishment of religion, or that would prohibit the free exercise of religion, or abridge the freedom of speech, the freedom of the press, the freedom of assembly, or the right to petition the government for redress of grievances. It was adopted on December 15, 1791, as one of the ten amendments that constitute the Bill of Rights.

    The key word in the Amendment is government.  Alaska Airlines is a private rather than governmental employer.  It can legally establish system regulations or people policies enforcing its behavioral and disciplinary standards providing these policies do not violate state and/or federal law.  

    Present federal law protections from discrimination regarding employment decisions are based on race, color, national origin, religion, gender (including pregnancy), disability, age (if the employee is at least 40 years old), and citizenship status.  The Equality Act is also adding protections based on one’s sexual orientation and gender identity.  These protections safeguard people who fit those categories from being discriminated against regarding employment decisions based on that status.  For example, Alaska Airlines couldn’t refuse to hire an otherwise qualified candidate only because s/he is 41 years of age.  

    What the law doesn’t allow for is using your protected status as a defense to harass or discriminate against others.  For example, someone over 40 years of age may not harass another person based on their race because they believe themselves to be an “old school thinker” and are basing their actions on beliefs/feelings from when they were younger or when things “were different.”  This becomes an issue of harassment and/or discrimination and the harasser is not protected from discipline because they fall into the protected class of age.  This applies to all protected classes. 

    The Alaska Airlines People Policy clarifies what constitutes harassment and discrimination, and the Grievance Committee has seen the Company discipline based upon those policies and the law.  While one may not intend to harass or discriminate, Alaska Airlines typically looks at the impact on the person being harassed and not the intent of the harasser.  So, while everyone is entitled to their private opinion or to share their opinion with their government, one can be disciplined for sharing an opinion deemed harassing, discriminatory or intolerant in the workplace or via social media if such nexus can be made to your private employer.  We share this information in the attempt to educate our fellow members and prevent any further discipline or terminations.

    Benefits Enrollment Upon Returning from a Leave of Absence (including EVF or ELOA)

    Benefits Committee

    As a reminder, Flight Attendants returning from a leave of absence, including EVF or ELOA, must complete the enrollment process again in order to maintain or reinstate company health benefits.  Optional coverages which were not in place during the leave such as FSA contributions or Supplemental Short-Term Disability must be re-added to your coverage.  Previously elected benefits do not resume automatically.  It is essential to contact Alaska Airlines Benefits at (844) 231-3476 or visit www.myalaskabenefits.com within 31 days from the date of returning to work to verify, enroll or make changes to benefits.  If enrollment is not completed during this window, no changes are able to be made until the next open enrollment period and your current health benefits may terminate, even if you maintained coverage during your EVF or other leave.

    What’s the Difference Between a Fear and a Phobia?

    Employee Assistance Program (EAP)/Professional Standards Committee

    Phobias come in many different forms. Acrophobia is the fear of heights. Trypanophobia is the fear of needles. Hodophobia is the fear of traveling.  Phobias are one of the most common mental health disorders with 11% of people experiencing at least one phobia over her/his lifespan.  So, what is the difference between a fear and a phobia? 

    Fears have a protective purpose.  They make us alert to danger and prepare us to deal with it.  Phobias involve the experience of persistent fear that is excessive and unreasonable. A fear of being hit by lightning during a thunderstorm will result in most of us leaving the beach when a thunderstorm pops up. Most would call this a reasonable, if not healthy fear.  Once the thunderstorm clears, we go back onto the beach.  Those with a phobia about being struck by lightning, which is called astraphobia, may find it difficult to even venture outside with a concern that a thunderstorm could pop up anytime.   The key to distinguishing a fear from a phobia is whether the person is physically and/or psychologically impaired by her/his worry.  In short, a phobia is a fear of being afraid. It results in a person limiting or eliminating normal life activities just to avoid the triggering objector event.  

    Most people generally don’t seek treatment for phobias. Only 6% of people with a phobia ever go in for treatment.  This low treatment rate is due in part because those with a phobia are not totally disabled by it. Many are able to successfully create routines to avoid their trigger(s).  Not before a person’s phobia is extremely severe or life limiting does one typically seek help.

    Even though phobias can be very disabling and downright exhausting, the great news is that phobias in children, adolescents and adults are also very treatable. If you’d like confidential assistance with a phobia or other anxiety disorders, call one of your Local EAP Committee Members.     REMINDER: Scholarship Opportunities

    In a previous AFA Update sent out on January 22, information was shared about scholarship opportunities available to AFA and CWA Members as well as certain eligible dependents.  Details about both scholarships, as well as information on how to apply, can be found by following the links below. 

    AFA Scholarship Fund

    The Association of Flight Attendants Scholarship Fund is intended to provide financial assistance to dependents of our active members who will be attending a college or university.  The deadline for applications is April 10.  Details are available on the AFA International website at http://www.afacwa.org/scholarships.

    CWA Joe Beirne Scholarship

    The Joe Beirne Scholarship is offered by CWA. The deadline for applications is April 30.   Details on this scholarship are on the CWA website at http://www.cwa-union.org/pages/beirne.

    CWA Database Crash:  A message from AFA International

    During this past week, the database at the AFA Membership Services Department experienced a significant technical disruption. While we are able to extract some member data, the problem limits our ability to access detailed information regarding your account. For example, if you need to pay outstanding dues, we are able to tell you the outstanding balance, but not the applicable month it covers. You would then be able to make payment by check or credit card (afacwa.org/payment).

    In advance, we thank you for your patience as all responses will be delayed as we perform the necessary changes to our database. If your question requires research into your membership account, we anticipate the response may be no sooner than November 1.

    Trending Performance Investigations and Disciplines

    CBT

    Discipline for failing to complete quarterly CBTs are continue to trend.  Flight Attendants returning from leave are given 60 days to complete CBTs.  The Council 35 Grievance Committee has been successful in assisting FAs dispute discipline when evidence of technical difficulties exist.  Being busy and forgetting to complete the CBT has not been accepted as extenuating circumstances to miss a CBT deadline and the discipline will remain.  If more than one CBT deadline is missed, discipline will progress to higher steps on the discipline scale (ie 2 missed CBTs in 18 month period will escalate to a Written Warning).

    Reserve Violations

    Reserves that spend their reserve days out-of-base or not remaining within airport during airport standby continue to be investigated.  Violations of the reserve proximity requirements will result in termination on the first offense.  Please see JCBA§11 for rules regarding reserve availability periods.

    Farewell to EO Flight Attendants 

    Council 35 officers would like to wish SFO Early Out (EO) Flight Attendants a fond farewell.  On behalf of the SFO membership we would like to thank you for your years of service and for making the decision to retire to alleviate furloughs due to COVID-19.  Best wishes to you and your family and best of luck in your next life adventure.

    COVID-19 Safety Concerns Onboard

    As reported in our September 9 Updates, service continues to put Flight Attendants at risk. Please continue to report any safety hazards that you experience while performing the expanded onboard service.  This could include instances of increased exposure to passengers (e.g. passenger removing their mask to speak to you, etc.) or other hazards related to service.  You can report these hazards through ReportIt! by submitting either a FAIR and/or ASAP for each flight on which they occur.  Include the terms “COVID-19″ and “service” in your narrative to ensure they are correctly categorized by management.  This data will help our AFA representatives to advocate for safe levels of service. 

    #ReliefNow

    Flight Attendants should continue to pressure Congress to put in place #ReliefNow. Make the calls to your state’s Representatives and Senators:

    “Hello, I am a constituent calling to ask my Senator/Representative to save my job as an essential worker and airline employee. An overwhelming majority of Congress supports an extension to the Payroll Support Program for aviation workers to avoid massive job loss in October and also to ensure there’s no cancellation of service to small communities. We need a COVID-19 relief package with our payroll support passed TODAY. Our jobs are on the line right now and millions are hurting without this relief! Keep us connected to our jobs, paychecks, & healthcare. We are counting on you. Thank you.”

    You can also find local office information by looking up your Representative and Senators at house.gov and senate.gov.  Visit the #ReliefNow page to find a mobilization event near you.

    When contacting Council 35 officers please avoid the following methods:

    • Sending to/from alaskaair email (subject to company audits and therefore not private)
    • Officer personal Facebook/social media accounts (not actively monitored for AFA concerns)
    • Excessively lengthy texts (please use email for important information as it’s easier to respond and forward to appropriate resource-texts should be reserved for alerts to an issue that requires a timely response)

    Introduction

    This information and assistance is for SFO employees and SFO based Flight Attendants who have recently been laid off, furloughed, or had their hours reduced as a result of COVID-19. It contains information about unemployment and disability benefits, health insurance options, available airport jobs, and more financial relief and supportive services available in our local communities.

    Members of our Master Executive Council (MEC) and other AFA Representatives will attend the AFA Board of Directors (BOD) Meeting next week. The BOD meeting is where business affecting all AFA airlines is conducted. Your LEC President is your representative at the BOD meeting and will be voting on your behalf regarding the approval of the AFA International budget.     Our AFA EAP/Professional Standards Committee (Members helping Members) seeks to assist Members, their families, and partners experiencing personal and work-related problems that could or are affecting their health and well-being on and off the job. Our EAP committee is a Union-sponsored support service provided by Flight Attendants for Flight Attendants, their families, and partners. EAP Peer Representatives are trained to provide three distinct but interrelated services: Assessment, Support, and Referral Services; Professional Standards; and Critical Incident Response.
    Our AFA Government Affairs Committee met with their representatives on Capitol Hill and urged them to pass the FAA Reauthorization Bill. This bill will improve aviation safety and conditions onboard the aircraft for flight crew and passengers. Top priorities discussed with Congress include cabin air safety, and stopping disruptive passenger abuse towards crew members and gate agents.
    Our AFA Reserve Committee Chairpersons met on Thursday, March 9 to discuss their ongoing program of work to represent and advocate for our Reserve Flight Attendants. The Committee also met with management to review a number of specific concerns that were brought forward by Flight Attendants. Your Local Reserve Committee is available to answer questions, provide clarification, or help to resolve any reserve related issues. Please don’t hesitate to reach out!

    Masks Are No Longer Required in Airports or Onboard

    The CDC and TSA report the federal mask mandate is no longer in effect after today’s court ruling. Additionally, Alaska Airlines management just announced via multiple channels that the mask mandate is lifted effective immediately on all aircraft.
