Inflight Service Local Chair – SEA Focus

Aloha Seattle Flight Attendants,

As our Seattle domicile continues to grow and evolve, your leadership has identified the need for an Inflight Service (IFS) Chair with a specific focus on SEA operations.

While our current Inflight Service Chair, Gary Mano’i, has supported all Council 47 members, we recognize the value of having a representative who is actively flying SEA-based routes, regularly interacting with Seattle crews, and able to provide direct feedback and advocacy regarding service-related concerns, challenges, and opportunities unique to the operation.

To help meet that need, we are opening a vacancy for:

Due to the timely nature of this vacancy, we apologize for the short notice regarding the interview process. Interviews are optional and are not required to be considered for this position. Members who choose to interview will not receive preference over applicants who do not participate in an interview.

Interviews will be conducted June 17-19, 2026.

Safety Committee

Please see below for several updates from the ASHS Committee regarding ongoing safety discussions, operational concerns, upcoming events, and recent committee activity.

Chair’s Schedule

Safety Stakeholders Meeting Updates

A330 Lavatory Flush Noise

Concerns were raised regarding lavatory flushing noise reportedly reaching approximately 90 decibels onboard the A330.


Topics discussed included:

• OSHA thresholds
• Custom hearing protection options
• Previous hearing protection programs offered by the Company

Follow-up discussions may include communications regarding reimbursement or program availability. Throughout the day, we strategized on member support, planned upcoming trainings, meetings, and conferences, and discussed ways to continue growing our representation. We are excited to have such a dedicated and knowledgeable group of committee chairs and committee members and look forward to continuing to build and expand our team.

Premium Class Alcohol Passed to Main Cabin

Discussion continued regarding the difficulty of tracking alcohol consumption when premium passengers provide drinks to passengers seated in the main cabin.

Additional discussion included:

• B2B updates currently in development
• Exit row premium seating changes effective June 1

PPE During Fume Events

Clarification was requested regarding the use of carbon-layered N100 masks during fume events.

Management indicated there should be no anticipated issue with PPE use during exposure events. Additional clarification was requested regarding what qualifies as a “qualifying exposure.”

Additional discussion included:

• N95 availability
• Current PPE inventory contained within Virus Kits

Thanks to quick responses from Flight Attendants, photos were submitted to management confirming incorrect mask types were supplied in some Virus Kits.

FAA Compliance Action Letters

There are currently two active FAA compliance action letters.

The largest compliance concerns continue to include:

1. Galley secure violations
2. Blocking passenger seats for crew use
3. Bags and tray tables being used to discourage passenger seating

Safety Reminder

Trash bags left unattended on doors, jump seats, latches, or carts present a fire hazard and remain a safety concern. Trash bags should be placed in approved trash carts equipped with secure fire-approved flaps or similar approved containment. For partially filled trash or recycle bags, crews are encouraged to tie the bags, store them appropriately, and reuse them when needed.

LAX Specific Updates

CRS “Approved for Cabin” Red Tags

The ASHS Committee raised concerns regarding inconsistent use of CRS “Approved for Cabin” red tags.

LAX management acknowledged the concern and advised it has been forwarded to the appropriate departments for review.

Event: Cabin Air Quality Documentary Screening

“This Is Your Captain Speaking” will begin screening May 29 at the Laemmle Theater in Santa Monica.

In this documentary, former airline Captain Tristan Loraine explores what the aviation industry knows regarding cabin air quality and oil fume exposure onboard aircraft.

Members are encouraged to attend, learn more about cabin air quality concerns, and support documentary filmmaking created by and for crewmembers.

Tracking Your ASHS Committee Chair

Last month, I took much needed time off and spent 15 days in Japan. I realized I hadn’t taken an out-of-country “proper” vacation in over 8 years. Why is this relevant? All the areas our ASHS committee covers– safety, health and security – were actively triggered on my trip. Planning, awareness, checking in with myself (mentally, physically, etc.), and taking precautionary measures when needed. It was a great reminder that we all bring to work with us our life experiences– good, bad, ugly and beautiful– and traveling on our own is one of the many ways we obtain useful knowledge in our field. So, here’s your excuse to take a vacation and reset. Your union said so.

Inflight Service Committee Update

🍲 HOST (Hawaiian Onboard Service Transition) Service Roadshows in LAX 🍲

The Company will be hosting HOST (Hawaiian Onboard Service Transition) Service Roadshows in LAX from June 23-25 and June 29-July 1. SEA dates will be communicated soon. These sessions are intended to provide Flight Attendants with an opportunity to learn more about onboard service changes, ask questions, and engage directly with members of the service team. HOST is specific to Hawaiian branded flights on the A330 and A321-neo.

The new Hawaiian onboard service is currently scheduled to launch on July 1, 2026. We encourage Flight Attendants who are interested and available to stop by during the roadshow dates to gather information, provide feedback, and better familiarize themselves with the ongoing service transition process ahead of the rollout.

A CBT (computer based training) will be sent to all Flight Attendants soon.

Primary election season is continuing across the country and we encourage all members to stay informed, verify their voter registration status, and make a plan to vote.

EAP Committee

As we continue supporting both the LAX and SEA bases through this transition period, the EAP Committee is happy to report that overall case volume has remained relatively low. While that is encouraging, we want to remind Flight Attendants that your EAP team is always available should you need support, resources, or simply someone to talk to.

We encourage our SEA-based Flight Attendants in particular to continue reaching out with any questions, concerns, or requests for assistance. Even if you are unsure whether EAP is the right resource, we are here to help guide you in the right direction.

Please do not hesitate to contact Milo Penarubia, Tracy Thompson, Bev Rezzara-Mendoza or Kahea Ching for support. Newly elected EAP Representatives — Lea Hutchinson, Malia Kaleopa’a and Alamoni Coppney will be attending EAP Certification soon. We will provide their contact information once their training is complete.

We would also like to remind members that Professional Standards is an excellent resource for resolving interpersonal conflicts or workplace concerns without involving management. Often, early communication and peer-to-peer conflict resolution can help address issues before they escalate further.

Grievance Committee

Crew Scheduling Meetings

Last month, AFA Hawaiian has officially begun joint meetings with Crew Scheduling, all Local Council Grievance Chairs, and the MEC Grievance Chair as part of our continued efforts to improve communication, consistency, and issue resolution across our operation.

As AFA Hawaiian representation has expanded across three domiciles, it is increasingly important that our Grievance Representatives remain aligned in how Scheduling Clarifications (SCRs), contractual concerns, and administrative matters are addressed. These meetings are intended to create a more structured and collaborative process between the Union and Crew Scheduling while ensuring consistency in communication and follow through across all bases.

Topics discussed include ongoing SCR trends, procedural clarifications, recurring scheduling concerns, and ways to improve coordination and response times for members seeking assistance.

Our goal is to strengthen communication, identify systemic issues more effectively, and ensure Flight Attendants across all domiciles receive consistent support and representation.

As always, endorsements are based on candidates’ demonstrated records of supporting workers, organized labor, collective bargaining rights, and issues impacting working people, without consideration of political party affiliation.

NGP will be at the LAX Village from June 10–12. This will be an opportunity for you to enroll in or make changes to your supplemental insurance plans.

NGP (National Group Protection) offers a range of voluntary benefits through CAIC (Continental American Insurance Company) designed to complement any existing coverage. This can include accident insurance, critical illness coverage, hospital indemnity plans, and more. These plans are intended to provide additional financial protection and flexibility based on your individual needs. Representatives will be available in the Malibu Room to answer questions and walk you through your options.

If you are scheduled to work on any of these days and would like to speak with an NGP representative, we encourage you to arrive early to allow enough time for your discussion, as other crew members may also be meeting with the representative throughout their visit.

Your AFA Air Quality Committee would like to share an upcoming documentary screening that may be of interest to our members, especially those based in or near LAX.

“This Is Your Captain Speaking” will be screened on May 29 at 7:00 PM at the Laemmle Monica Film Center in Santa Monica.

In this documentary, former airline captain Tristan Loraine takes a deeper look into what the aviation industry knows about the quality of the air we breathe onboard the aircraft. The film explores concerns surrounding oil fume events and cabin air quality through the perspectives of aviation professionals and crewmembers. This is an opportunity to learn more about this important issue while supporting documentary filmmaking made by and for crewmembers.

This is huge! Films have the power to influence and influence has the power to create change. I’m talking about new classifications, legislation, policies, etc. They’ve known for over 70 years about the aircraft engine air bleed system design flaw that causes toxic fumes to enter the cabin, and yet fume events still occur on a regular basis. This isn’t a fictional thriller, it’s the truth about your working conditions and what you and everyone onboard are exposed to.

Fume events are a serious matter and should always be reported through Intelex. If you experience or encounter a fume event, I encourage you to contact me (Kahea Alvarez — Local Safety Chair), so that I can provide you and your crew resources and information, continue to document concerns and advocate for Flight Attendant safety.
