        Reserve Committee Meeting Recap – 1st Quarter 2025

        • Our AFA Reserve Committee Chairpersons met on Thursday, March 13, to discuss their ongoing program of work to represent and advocate for our Reserve Flight Attendants.
        • The Committee also met with management to review specific concerns that Flight Attendants brought forward.

        On Thursday, March 13, representatives from our AFA Local Reserve Committees met to discuss their ongoing work to advocate for Reserve Flight Attendants. Representing you at the meeting were Brandi Urban (ANC), Conner Gallagher (SEA), Anthony Eskander (PDX), Meghan Casey (SFO), Kanako Yamada (LAX), and Rebecca Garcia (SAN). Also present was MEC Reserve Committee Chairperson Julie Thornton and MEC Reserve Committee Vice Chairperson—New Hire & Probation Jarod McNeill.

        The committee met with the Interim Managing Director of Inflight Crew Scheduling & Inflight Operations (South) Sara Cook and Manager of Inflight Crew Scheduling Goose Hlaingmyint.

        The committee is next scheduled to meet on Thursday, June 19

        Topics of Discussion

        The committee reviewed several items during both internal AFA-only discussions and meetings with management. Some of the topics discussed include:

        • Plans for the initial training classes for the remainder of the year. Management has canceled Class 6 this year; however, they still plan to hire more Flight Attendants. The number of classes and the specific number of students in each class will depend on the delivery of new aircraft. Class 2 is scheduled to be online on April 1, and Class 3 will be online on May 1.
        • Staffing within Crew Scheduling: six new schedulers have been hired and are currently in training, bringing the total number of crew schedulers to 49.
        • A review of reserve utilization statistics shows approximately 87.1% utilization across all bases. Reserve coverage is expected to be around 18% in all bases, except for Seattle, where it is anticipated to be about 20% for Q2.
        • A discussion about new contractual provisions and their implications for reserve Flight Attendants.
        • Ongoing concerns regarding no-shows due to issues with cell phone providers and cell service. Please report these issues through the AFA Alaska Online Support Center so AFA representatives can follow up with management.

        What The Committee Is Working On

        1. Developing Additional Tools & Resources for Reserve Flight Attendants. Working to update Reserve 101 & the Reserve survival guide with new CBA provisions.
        2. Assisting Probationary Flight Attendants Through the Reserve Buddy Program. Answering questions from and providing support to probationary Flight Attendants through an expanded AFA Reserve Buddy program. Also, developing a checklist of common topics that new hire Flight Attendants need assistance with within the first 30 days after graduation.
        3. Addressing Reserve Contractual Concerns. Researching and investigating reports from Reserve Flight Attendants and actively ensuring that management complies with our contract.

        • Our AFA Reserve Committee Chairpersons met on Thursday, December 12, to discuss their ongoing program of work to represent and advocate for our Reserve Flight Attendants.

        On Thursday, December 12, representatives from our AFA Local Reserve Committees met to discuss their ongoing work to advocate for Reserve Flight Attendants. Representing you at the meeting were Brandi Urban (ANC), Conner Gallagher (SEA), Anthony Eskander (PDX), Meghan Casey (SFO), Kanako Yamada (LAX), and Rebecca Garcia (SAN). Also present was MEC Reserve Committee Chairperson Julie Thornton and MEC Reserve Committee Vice Chairperson—New Hire & Probation Jarod McNeill.

        Topics of Discussion

        The committee reviewed several items both during internal AFA-only conversation and when meeting with management. Some items discussed include:

        • Management Staffing in Crew Scheduling. Management has recently hired two new Crew Scheduling Supervisors who are currently undergoing onboarding. They are expected to be on the floor early next year. 
        • Initial Training Plans for 2025. The number of training classes and the specific number of students in each class will depend on the delivery schedule of new aircraft.
        • Social Media Issues. Social media is currently the primary cause of occurrences among probationary Flight Attendants.
        • Crew Access Issues. Crew Access issues and glitches are ongoing and affecting Reserve Flight Attendants. Reviewed where known issues are documented and any newly added or fixed issues.
        • Upcoming Crew Access Update. A review is scheduled for the upcoming updates to the Crew Access software. This will include associated fixes for current issues and the prioritization of programming improvements.
        • Reserve Utilization Statistics. Currently, reserve utilization stands at approximately 85.7% across all bases. For the first quarter, reserve coverage is expected to be around 18-20%.
        • Escalated Reserve-Related Issues. Reviewed the reserve-related issues that have been escalated to the Scheduling Review Board (SRB) and the Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR) processes.
        • Concerns with No-Shows and Connectivity. There are ongoing concerns regarding no-shows, the inability to contact Reserve Flight Attendants, and connectivity issues. Please report these matters through the AFA Alaska Online Support Center so that AFA Representatives can follow up with management.

        What The Committee Is Working On

        1. Assisting Probationary Flight Attendants Through the Reserve Buddy Program.   Answering questions from and providing support to probationary Flight Attendants through an expanded AFA Reserve Buddy program.
        2. Addressing Reserve Contractual Concerns. Researching and investigating reports from Reserve Flight Attendants and actively ensuring that management is compliant with our contract. 
        3. Developing Additional Tools & Resources for New Flight Attendants. Working to create a plan to provide more user friendly, easy-to-access resources about the CBA and other job-related information for new Flight Attendants.

        On Thursday, September 12, representatives from our AFA Local Reserve Committees met to discuss their ongoing work to advocate for Reserve Flight Attendants. Representing you at the meeting were Brandi Urban (ANC), Conner Gallagher (SEA), Anthony Eskander (PDX), Meghan Casey (SFO), Kanako Yamada (LAX), and Adrian Alcantara (SAN). Also present was MEC Reserve Committee Chairperson Julie Thornton and MEC Reserve Committee Vice Chairperson—New Hire & Probation Jarod McNeill.

        The committee met with the Director of Inflight Crew Scheduling Sara Cook and Inflight Crew Scheduling Supervisor Matthew Trujilo.

        The committee is next scheduled to meet on Thursday, December 12.

        Topics of Discussion

        The committee reviewed a number of items both during internal AFA-only conversation and when meeting with management. Some items discussed include:

        • Initial Training classes for the remainder of 2024. Class 5 will start in October and will be online in December; this will be the last class of the year. Management has begun discussions about classes for next year, however the number of classes and specific number of students in each class has not yet been confirmed.
        • LOAs & Settlement agreements that pertain to Reserve Flight Attendants.
        • Our partnership with the PBS Committee with their in person & virtual PBS bidding assistance offered monthly. 
        • Recent Reserve-related scheduling issues.
        • Crew Scheduling staffing. Sara Cook hired 3 additional Crew Schedulers and plans to continue to grow her team in the new year.  
        • Reserve-related issues that were escalated to the Scheduling Review Board (SRB) and Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR) processes. 

        What The Committee Is Working On

        1. Assisting Probationary Flight Attendants Through the Reserve Buddy Program.   Answering questions from and providing support to probationary Flight Attendants through an expanded AFA Reserve Buddy program.
        2. Addressing Reserve Contractual Concerns. Researching and investigating reports from Reserve Flight Attendants and actively ensuring that management is compliant with our contract.

        On Thursday, June 13, representatives from our AFA Local Reserve Committees met to discuss their ongoing work to advocate for Reserve Flight Attendants. Representing you at the meeting were Brandi Urban (ANC), Conner Gallagher (SEA), Anthony Eskander (PDX), Meghan Casey (SFO), Kanako Yamada (LAX), and Rebecca Garcia (SAN). Also present was MEC Reserve Committee Chairperson Julie Thornton and MEC Reserve Committee Vice Chairperson—New Hire & Probation Jarod McNeill. 

        The committee met with the Director of Inflight Crew Scheduling Sara Cook and Crew Pay Process Manager Michelle Carcalean.

        The committee is next scheduled to meet on Thursday, September 12.

        Topics of Discussion

        The committee reviewed a number of items both during internal AFA-only conversation and when meeting with management. Some items discussed include:

        • Issues & glitches with Crew Access that are affecting Reserve Flight Attendants.  Review of where known issues are documented and newly added/ fixed issues. 
        • Review of upcoming update to Crew Access software and associated fixes to current issues and other improvements prioritization for programming fixes.
        • Management staffing within Crew Scheduling.  Sara Cook hired two testers for CrewAccess that are dedicated to help Crew Scheduling test new updates prior to implementation and when a new issue is found attempting to figure out why and how to fix it. 
        • Review of reserve-related issues that have been escalated to the Scheduling Review Board (SRB) and Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR) processes.
        • Review of reserve utilization statistics for the quarter, it is approximately 92.8% in all bases.  
        • Increase usage of LIMO in California bases and why
        • Ongoing concern with ISA coded trips and increase in no shows.  Please report these issues through the AFA Alaska Online Support Center so that AFA representatives can follow up with management. 

        What The Committee Is Working On

        1. Assisting Probationary Flight Attendants Through the Reserve Buddy Program.   Answering questions from and providing support to probationary Flight Attendants through an expanded AFA Reserve Buddy program.
        2. Addressing Reserve Contractual Concerns. Researching and investigating reports from Reserve Flight Attendants and actively ensuring that management is compliant with our contract. 
        3. Developing Additional Tools & Resources for New Flight Attendants. Working to create a plan to provide more user friendly, easy-to-access resources about the CBA and other job-related information for new Flight Attendants.

        On Thursday, March 14, representatives from our AFA Local Reserve Committees met to discuss their ongoing work to advocate for Reserve Flight Attendants. Representing you at the meeting were Brandi Urban (ANC), Teran Eason (SEA), Anthony Eskander (PDX), Meghan Casey (SFO), Kanako Yamada (LAX), and Rebecca Garcia (SAN). Also present was MEC Reserve Committee Chairperson Julie Thornton and MEC Reserve Committee Vice Chairperson—New Hire & Probation Jarod McNeill. 

        The committee met with the Director of Inflight Crew Scheduling Sara Cook, Manager of Inflight Crew Scheduling Goose Hlaingmyint, Director of Payroll Leah Ables, Manager of Crew Pay Debbie Bakke and Managing Director of Operations & Crew Scheduling Allen Theiman.

        The committee is next scheduled to meet on Thursday, June 13.

        Topics of Discussion

        The committee reviewed a number of items both during internal AFA-only conversation and when meeting with management. Some items discussed include:

        • Plans for Initial Training classes for 2024. Class one started on March 18 and will be online May 1. Management is still unsure on the exact number of classes for the year. The specific number of classes and students in each class will be dependent on attrition.
        • Issues and glitches with Crew Access that are affecting Reserve Flight Attendants. Review where known issues are documented and newly added/ fixed issues.
        • Upcoming update to Crew Access software and associated fixes to current issues and other improvements prioritization for programming fixes.
        • Reserve utilization statistics – approximately 90.7% in all bases. Reserve coverage is anticipated to be at approximately 22-21% for Quarter 2.
        • Service flights will increase to two flights and service training will continue in Initial Training this year.
        • Reserve-related scheduling issues that have occurred recently.
        • Ongoing concerns with ISA. Please report these issues through theAFA Alaska Online Support Center so AFA representatives can follow up with management. 
        • Reserve-related issues that have been escalated to the Scheduling Review Board (SRB) and Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR) processes.
