RED Hot Informational Picketing on August 27th

It’s time to turn up the heat and show our support to the Negotiating Committee when they go back to the table August 25th through 28th.  Your Master Executive Council (MEC), in coordination with the Mobilization and Negotiating Committees, are planning to share our message with the public at each of our five bases.  Be on the lookout for more information from your Local Council about the details of our August 27th informational picketing events.

Gear Up For Solidarity on July 22nd

Are you ready to GEAR UP for our next solidarity activity?  Things are going to get RED Hot as we go back the negotiating table with management.  The time has come to STAND UP In support of your Negotiating Committee at the next system-wide SOLIDARITY event on July 22nd!

Here’s what you can do to help support your Negotiating Committee:

  • Bid July 22nd off so that you can participate in the next SOLIDARITY event
  • Continue to show management our STRENGTH by wearing your RED AFA pin

More information will be out soon about the July 22ndevent, including time slots for each base.

How Do I Get My RED AFA Pin?

Our new RED AFA pins are a hot commodity!  Here’s how you can get yours:

  • Mobilization Volunteers have been provided with a supply of RED AFA pins, lanyards, and other giveaway items.  They will be available inside KCM checkpoints in conjunction with their flying schedules.
  • If you don’t have the chance to see a Mobilization Volunteer, email your Local Mobilization Chairperson.  They’ll have instructions on how to get a RED AFA pin at your base.  You can find contact information for your Local Mobilization Chairperson at alaskamec.org/mobilization.

MEC Update May 9, 2014: Alaska Air Group Shareholders Meeting Rally

Dear Flight Attendants,

Yesterday afternoon Flight Attendants demonstrated their solidarity by rallying at the Alaska Air Group (AAG) Shareholders meeting at the Anchorage Museum in downtown Anchorage. The Master Executive Council (MEC) thanks Council 30 Anchorage for hosting the event.

We estimate approximately 75 Flight Attendants participated in the rally and informational picketing, including those on an Anchorage layover in addition to Anchorage-based Flight Attendants.  The total crowd was well over 100, with friends, family and other union members joining in.  Many thanks for the support of the Communications Workers of America (CWA), the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), Working Washington, Jobs with Justice, Nursing Education Alumni Association (NEAA) Teachers, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), Alaska Public Employees Association / American Federation of Teachers (APEA/AFT), Longshoremen, Teamsters, Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees Union (HERE), United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) and Alaska Laborers.

The rally included an informational picket and the distribution of a flier (see below) to anybody passing by the picket line, including AAG Board of Directors members, Shareholders and management.  The rally was picked up by several media outlets, including KTUU Channel 2 Anchorage and Alaska Dispatch (reprinted on the front page of the Anchorage Daily News local section).  More pictures at KTUU.

Following the rally, some of your AFA leaders and Flight Attendant Shareholders moved inside for the meeting. MEC President Jeffrey Peterson, Council 30 President Becky Strachan and Council 30 Vice President and Negotiating Committee member Lisa Pinkston represented AFA.  During the question and answer portion of the Shareholders meeting, MEC President Jeff Peterson was given the opportunity to make a brief statement on behalf of AFA:

Negotiations Update May 2, 2014 – National Mediation Board Cancels May Negotiations

Dear Flight Attendants,

A short time ago, the National Mediation Board (NMB) officially notified the AFA and management negotiating teams that it has delayed our return to mediation until July by canceling the negotiations session scheduled for the week of May 12th.

Once in mediation, the NMB has control over our meeting schedule and they have the authority to decide that a mediation session should be canceled.

Do we agree with this decision?  No!  We would always be ready to meet and make progress in our quest for a new contract.  We have expressed our frustration that there is no available meeting date in June. Despite our protests, mediation will resume in late July.

Even if we wanted to meet earlier than July, AFA and management do not believe it is in the best interest of either party to proceed without the sanction of the NMB.  However, as a show of good faith management has agreed to absorb AFA’s costs resulting from the relatively last-minute cancellation.

Given that we have no choice, AFA will make good use of the downtime.  We have already established meeting dates for our own internal review of the negotiations survey.  Additionally, we will hold a joint AFA negotiations training with the Negotiating Committee and the Master Executive Council (MEC) leadership.  AFA International trainers, legal staff and department heads will also participate in the training.

While this is an unfortunate delay, we are determined to take advantage of the situation and use it to prepare for the next session and demonstrate to the NMB–and management–just how serious we are about getting back to the table and fighting for the contract that we all deserve.

Our sincere thanks to management for covering the cancellation fees.  The parties are looking forward to getting back to the table the week of July 21st.
