Side Letter of Agreement CBA §30.E. [Trainers Performing Probationary Observation Flights or Initial Operating Experiences (IOEs)]

        May 9, 2016 12:00

Your AFA Alaska Master Executive Council (MEC) and Alaska Airlines management have entered into a side letter of agreement that allows qualified Flight Attendant Trainers to certify Initial Operating Experiences (IOEs) for Flight Attendant trainees.

A copy of the side letter of agreement (signatures pending) can be found by clicking here. You may also find the agreement on the “contract” page of the AFA Alaska website: http://afaalaska.org/contract.

Previously only management employees holding a Flight Attendant-qualified FAA certificate could certify IOEs for trainees. This agreement modifies §CBA 30.E [Trainers Performing Probationary Observation Flights], which already provided for Trainers to conduct Probationary Observation Flights, and incorporates IOEs into that provision.

This side letter of agreement was supported by our Flight Attendant Trainers and developed with input from that group. The major benefit of the agreement is that a larger pool of certifying personnel allows IOEs to be conducted during training. In the past, graduating trainees had to fly their IOEs immediately following graduation.

In addition to being worried about flying their IOEs, trainees also had to be concerned with positioning themselves to their respective new domiciles prior to their start date. Depending on how closely the start date followed graduation, this may have been a stressfully short period of time. With IOEs finished prior to graduation, trainees can truly celebrate graduation without worrying about possibly flying the next morning. They can also focus exclusively on moving to their new domiciles.

IOEs for Class 2016-01 begin today, so you may see some Flight Attendant Trainers out there certifying IOEs in the next couple days. Congratulations to the first graduating class of 2016 and thanks to our Flight Attendant Trainers for their continuing efforts to get our trainees out to the line!

        In solidarity,

Your MEC – Jeffrey Peterson, Brian Palmer, Yvette Satterlee, Lisa Pinkston, Laura Masserant, Cathy Gwynn, Sandra Morrow, Stephen Couckuyt; LEC Presidents-elect Tim Green and Brice McGee

        An Update on Printed Contracts

        February 18, 2016 05:00

        Contracts and Binders Available Soon

After a lengthy formatting and production process, hard copy contracts have finally been published and are being shipped from the printing vendor to each base. The hard copy contracts will be distributed along with a new blue plastic contract binder (similar to your Flight Attendant Manual binder), which is currently still in production. Management has advised that the binders should be shipped within the next 10 days. Once the contracts and binders have been received in each base, we will provide you with more information as to how distribution will be accomplished.

TA2 vs. Final Contract Printed Comparison Documents

As a reminder, a comparison document highlighting the difference between TA-2 and the final contract continues to be available on the AFA Alaska website and can be found here: http://wp.me/a46aMs-1HP. A limited number of hard copies of the comparison document will also be available in the bases with the printed contracts.

In the mean time, you can continue to access the contract online at http://afaalaska.org/contract and on your IMD in the GoodReader app.

        In Solidarity,

Your MEC – Jeffrey Peterson, Brian Palmer, Yvette Gesch, Lisa Pinkston, Laura Masserant, Cathy Gwynn, Sandra Morrow and Stephen Couckuyt; and

        2015 Performance Based Pay

        January 22, 2016 14:00

PBP is 9.3% of 2015 eligible earnings

Congratulations for another generous Performance Based Pay (PBP) payout! The 2015 PBP for most employees—including flight attendants—is 9.3% of eligible earnings, which is the equivalent of nearly five weeks of pay. More information about PBP can be found on Alaska’s World at https://splash.alaskasworld.com/News/2016/01/21_pbp.asp (login required).

PBP has averaged 8.8% of eligible earnings for flight attendants

Flight attendants first received PBP in 2009, which was paid in early 2010 and incorporated into the Collective Bargaining Agreement as part of the 2010 Contract Extension. Flight attendants previously participated in the Variable Pay Plan (VPP), which had a maximum payout of 7.0% of eligible earnings. PBP has averaged 8.8% of eligible earnings over the past seven years that flight attendants have been receiving PBP.

PBP is very competitive when compared to profit sharing plans at other carriers

If you have heard that profit sharing at another carrier is better than our PBP, know this: Profit sharing for line employees at most other carriers has been lucrative only in the last few years. When you consider that PBP has paid out an average of 8.8% of eligible earnings in every year we’ve been on the plan (since 2009), PBP is very competitive when compared with the best of other profit sharing plans in the industry.

        * * *

Thank you for all your hard work—now let’s all pull together to achieve the maximum PBP payout in 2016!

        In solidarity,

Your MEC – Jeffrey Peterson, Brian Palmer, Yvette Gesch, Lisa Pinkston, Laura Masserant, Cathy Gwynn, Sandra Morrow and Stephen Couckuyt

AFA Alaska Airlines Collective Bargaining Agreement 2014-2019

        November 23, 2015 17:00

Electronic Contract with Hyperlinked Citations and Index

AFA and Alaska Airlines management are finally ready to publish the electronic contract with hyperlinked citations and index. We hope you will find the document much easier to use on your mobile devices compared to prior versions. Besides the link below, you can find the contract and active letters of agreement at afaalaska.org/contract. Management will also be pushing the contract to your Inflight Mobile Device.

If you click on the hyperlinked citation references, the document will reposition to that citation. If the citation is a sub-paragraph within a main “header,” the hyperlink will take you to the header and you simply have to scroll down to the desired paragraph. At the bottom of every page you will find a link for the Table of Contents, the Index and the Reference section. The Reference section shows a list of the main headers within each section as well as the letters of agreement. All of the citations are hyperlinked throughout the document for ease of reference.

Although we have scoured the contract many times over, with a document as complex as this one there are bound to be a few errors such as incorrect or broken hyperlinks. If you find something amiss, email the Contract Committee at contract@afaalaska.org. It is possible to periodically update the electronic contract as needed to correct those minor errors.

TA2 Print vs Final Print Versions Comparison

There have been several contractual improvements and clarifications added since the TA2 Print version. In order to make it easier to identify the changes, we have created a comparison document that highlights differences between the two. The comparison document is produced using a computer program that catches the vast majority of differences, but it is not infallible. Be aware there may be a few citations that are not highlighted even though the citations differ between the versions.

        –> Printed TA2 v2 vs Final Printed Copy v1 thru LOA6 Comparison <–

        Hard copies

The contract will be sent off to the printer shortly, and we expect publication to take several weeks. AFA and management are ordering enough for every flight attendant to have a trade paperback sized hard copy of the contract. As soon as we have the details regarding an estimated release date and the means of distribution, we will provide an update.

        * * *

It has been a long time coming—we thank you for your patience! If you have any concerns or questions, please contact your LEC president.

        In solidarity,

Your MEC—Jeffrey Peterson, Brian Palmer, Yvette Gesch, Lisa Pinkston, Laura Masserant, Cathy Gwynn, Sandra Morrow and Stephen Couckuyt; and
