Adapting to Change, Z-block (Crew Rest Seats), FFA Paperwork

        Aloha LAX,

We wanted to take a moment to share a few updates and items of interest affecting our LAX members.

Please take a few moments to review the updates below. As always, if you have any questions, concerns, or feedback, do not hesitate to reach out. We appreciate your continued engagement and support.

        Mahalo,

        NGP in LAX

Reminder: Last Day to Meet with NGP is Tomorrow

Tomorrow is the final day to meet with National Group Protection (NGP) in the Malibu Room.

NGP is AFA’s endorsed provider of voluntary supplemental insurance programs, including accident, disability, critical illness, life insurance, and other financial protection benefits available to Flight Attendants and their families.

Jimmy Tchen will be available during both check-in periods tomorrow to answer questions, assist with enrollments, review existing coverage, update beneficiaries, and discuss available benefit options.

If you plan to stop by the lounge to meet with Jimmy, please arrive early and allow yourself enough time. Many Flight Attendants may be looking to meet with him, and we want to ensure everyone has an opportunity to have their questions answered.

Jimmy has graciously provided his personal phone number for members who have questions regarding NGP benefits, enrollment, or existing coverage. He can be reached at (626) 438-4366.

Please be mindful that this is Jimmy’s personal phone number and that he is located in the Pacific Time Zone. We recommend sending a text message rather than placing an unsolicited call and ask that you be respectful of the time of day when reaching out.

Mahalo to Jimmy for taking the time to support our members and provide information about these valuable benefit options.

        Adapting to Change

For the past several months, we have been talking about the constant change we are experiencing, not only as an airline, but also as a base. LAX has always been a small but resilient domicile, and it is the members of Council 47 who have made this base such a special place.

We cannot ignore the fact that the changes taking place can be unsettling. There are still many unknowns, and it is natural to wonder what the future of LAX will look like. What we do know, and what is certain, is that as negotiated in the SEA Domicile Sideletter, the LAX base will remain open and operational.

The unknowns are not whether LAX will continue to exist, but rather what our flying and staffing levels will look like moving forward. With the new SEA vacancies effective in August, (5) five LAX Flight Attendants have chosen to transfer bringing our total staffing numbers to (109) one hundred nine.

Your AFA representatives have been, and will continue to be, engaged with Crew Planning to determine what flying opportunities are possible based on our staffing levels. One of the factors affecting this process is the trip planning optimizer that Alaska uses to build our pairings. As discussed in previous communications, the optimizer evaluates flying across all bases and produces the most cost-effective operation for the airline as a whole, rather than focusing on any single base.

One area where AFA has been successful is advocating for the continuation of turn flying in LAX. Following the period where we saw pockets of days without any flying assigned to LAX, we worked closely with the company to ensure that some level of flying remains available each day. While this may not be what many of us are accustomed to, this more varied mix of flying has become our new normal.

LAX is not alone in experiencing these changes. HNL is navigating many of the same challenges. However, because of the size of our base, the impact is often felt much more significantly here. We continue to remind management that changes affecting a small base like LAX are felt tenfold by our members and require thoughtful consideration.

While we may not have all the answers today, please know that your Council 47 officers remain actively engaged in these discussions and continue to advocate on your behalf every step of the way. LAX has always demonstrated resilience through periods of change, and that strength comes from our members. We will continue to keep you informed, fight for opportunities for our base, and ensure that your voices are heard.

        Z-Block (Crew Rest Seats)

We have received reports that designated crew rest seats have been assigned to passengers on flights that were not fully booked. This is a contractual violation and has been addressed with management.

The Labor Relations Department met with Airport Operations and identified the source of the issue. The automated system is not currently recognizing the crew rest seat z-blocks, requiring a manual process to protect those seats. The company has advised that this manual process is an interim solution while a more permanent fix is pursued.

If you encounter a flight that is not fully booked and designated crew rest seats have been assigned to passengers, please politely advise the gate agents of our contractual right to those seats (Section 7.D.2.f). We also ask that you document the occurrence by submitting an Intelex report in addition to emailing your officers (47@afahawaiian.org) so we can continue tracking the issue and ensuring compliance.

        First Flight Attendant (FFA) Paperwork

It has come to our attention that the First Flight Attendant paperwork at LAX was not being consistently maintained and replenished. Once we became aware of the issue, we immediately brought it to the attention of the LAX management team.

Management has acknowledged the concern, apologized for the oversight, and committed to ensuring that the paperwork is properly maintained and restocked moving forward.

If you notice any issues with First Flight Attendant paperwork availability, please contact your Council 47 officers or reach out directly to the LAX management team so the issue can be addressed promptly.

This message is for pre-merger Alaska Flight Attendants

On Thursday, June 4, representatives from our pre-merger Alaska AFA Reserve Committee met to discuss ongoing work advocating for Reserve Flight Attendants. Representing you at the meeting were Conner Gallager (SEA), Anthony Eskander (PDX), Kanako Yamada (LAX), Adrian Alcantara (SAN), and MEC Reserve Committee Vice Chairperson—New Hire & Probation Meghan Casey (SFO). MEC Reserve Committee Chairperson Julie Thornton facilitated the meeting.

The Committee met with the Manager of Inflight Crew Scheduling Goose Hlaingmyint, Managing Director of Inflight Performance & Crew Scheduling Sara Cook, and Director of Inflight Crew Scheduling Terrance Chariandy.

The Committee is next scheduled to meet on Thursday, September 3.

        Topics of Discussion

The Committee reviewed several items during internal AFA-only discussions and meetings with management. Topics discussed included:

        • Formalizing New Hire Onboarding
          • Desire for new hire onboarding improvements while in training. Discussion on ways to improve new hires’ first day, week, and month at base. All Committee Members expressed a desire for a base orientation to improve new hire transitions.Class 2-26 graduated last month and started online in ANC on June 1.
          • At this time, management is stating there are no other classes planned for this year.
        • Addressing Reserve Pay Anomalies
          • Noticing an increase in AM Reserves who are being assigned APSB shifts that end after 12:00 and are not being converted to ER prior to the assignment.Encouraging Reserves to check Rainmaker for any APSB shifts that ended after 12:00, and if the APSB also ended after the daily last flight, Reserves should be paid 3x for the APSB shift. If a Reserve believes pay is missing, reach out to your Local Reserve Committee Chairperson.
          • Procedure to guarantee daily last flight pay: Flight Attendants are encouraged to call and explicitly request a release from APSB after the daily last flight has departed to ensure they are denied, which guarantees 2x pay. If the last flight of the day is delayed, some Flight Attendants may not qualify at the end of the day.
        • Requesting More Flexibility for Reserves
          • Management agreed to review decreasing the ARC minimum and awarding more Personal Drops and Bulletin Board Drops.
        • Evaluating Contractual Interpretation Disagreements
          • Any disputes that are not resolved with Crew Scheduling Supervisors are then escalated to Scheduling Review Board (SRB) or Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR) for further discussion.
          • Discussion of recent Reserve issues regarding double out rest, day rooms, and removal of self-assignment prior to report.

What The Committee Is Working On

        1. Developing Additional Tools & Resources for Reserve Flight Attendants: Reserve Survival Guide and Reserve 101 are updated and will be uploaded to the Inflight Website and AFA Website. Working on developing videos for common questions & answers for Reserves.
        2. Assisting Reserve Flight Attendants with Pay Concerns: Answering questions and providing clarification to Reserve Flight Attendants regarding Reserve Guarantee and premium pay contractual provisions.
        3. Addressing Reserve Contractual Concerns: Researching and investigating reports from Reserve Flight Attendants and actively ensuring that management complies with our contract. Reminder to Flight Attendants about the AFA Alaska Online Support Center to report issues, raise concerns, or ask questions.

ER Domicile Rest, FCO Per Diem, Italian Language Position, Z-Block (Crew Rest)

        Aloha Seattle,

We wanted to address a few issues that have recently come up. Please take a few moments to review the information below and reach out if you have any questions, concerns, or need additional clarification.

We understand this is a significant amount of information, but we encourage you to read through it carefully and share these updates with your flying partners. Keeping one another informed helps ensure we are all aware of our contractual rights, current issues, and available resources.

Mahalo for your continued engagement and support.

        ER Domicile Rest

AFA has received several questions regarding domicile rest requirements when a flight’s actual block time exceeds its scheduled flight time, particularly on London Heathrow (LHR) pairings.

Under our Contract Section 7.D.2.a.(1)-(2), domicile rest is determined by the scheduled flight time, not the actual flight time flown in operation. Scheduled flight time refers to the flight time published in the bid packet.

For example, LHR pairings are currently scheduled less than ten (10) hours of flight time. Therefore, upon returning to domicile, these pairings are subject to the contractual rest requirement applicable to flights scheduled under ten (10) hours, which is twenty-four (24) hours of domicile rest.

Even if actual operations result in the flight exceeding ten (10) hours, the domicile rest requirement does not change because the Contract bases the rest calculation on the scheduled flight time.

If a Flight Attendant elects to schedule themselves with back-to-back Extended Range (ER) pairings with less than one additional hour of rest above the contractual minimum, the Company may reduce the required domicile rest by up to 1.5 hours in actual operations.

        • A Flight Attendant requiring 24 hours of domicile rest who schedules themselves between 24 and 25 hours of rest
        • A Flight Attendant requiring 36 hours of domicile rest who schedules themselves between 36 and 37 hours of rest

If a Flight Attendant schedules themselves with at least one additional hour of domicile rest above the contractual minimum between back-to-back Extended Range (ER) pairings, and operational delays reduce their rest below the contractual minimum, the Flight Attendant must be removed from the second ER pairing and will receive pay and credit protection for the trip missed.

        EXAMPLES:

        • Example 1: A bid Flight Attendant schedules her/himself with back-to-back ER pairings with 24:45 rest between the pairings. The minimum rest requirement after the first pairing is 24 hours. The first trip’s return to SEA is delayed by one (1) hour, which reduces the rest between the two pairings to 23:45. Because the Flight Attendant originally scheduled her/himself below 25:00 rest between the ER pairings (the minimum ER rest of 24:00, plus one (1) hour), she or he will not be removed from the second ER pairing because her/his rest may be reduced to 22:30.
        • Example 2: A bid Flight Attendant schedules her/himself with back-to-back ER pairings with 25:00 rest between the pairings. The minimum rest requirement after the first pairing is 24 hours. The first trip’s return to SEA is delayed by one hour and fifteen minutes (1:15), which reduces the rest between the two pairings to 23:45. Because the Flight Attendant originally scheduled her/himself with 25:00 rest between the two ER pairings (the minimum ER rest of 24:00, plus one (1) hour), she/he will be removed from the second ER pairing and pay protected because her/his rest was subsequently reduced below 24:00.

If you have any additional questions, please email our grievance committee at 47.grievance@afahawaiian.org

        In Solidarity,

Melissa Teshima (Chair), Josh Aoki, Paul Ikioka, Beth Hayes, Gary Mano’i & Patrick Smith

        47.grievance@afahawaiian.org

        FCO Per Diem

It has come to our attention that Flight Attendants who operated FCO pairings may not have received the full per diem amount. Payroll has been notified, and your Council 47 Officers are working with the company to ensure an appropriate remedy is identified.

At this time, there is no need to individually contact Payroll, as this appears to be a system-wide issue affecting all Flight Attendants who operated these trips. Please stand by for an update, which we anticipate providing by the end of this week.

As a reminder, current per diem rates can be found on the IFS website (using your Hawaiian log-in) under the Crew Scheduling tab at the very bottom if using a mobile device, on the right side if using a desktop. Per diem rates are subject to change and may vary from month to month, so we encourage all Flight Attendants to regularly verify that they are being paid correctly for the trips they fly.

For foreign destinations, per diem is paid from block-in at the foreign destination until block-out from that destination [Section 4.A.3]. We recommend reviewing your pay records to ensure the appropriate amount was credited.

        Italian Speaker Sign-in Position

We have received inquiries regarding whether Italian Language (IT) Flight Attendants are required to occupy specific positions on the aircraft when signing in.

Unlike our Asia Language Flight Attendants, Italian Language Flight Attendants are not restricted to designated positions. Italian Language Flight Attendants may sign into any position their seniority allows them to hold, consistent with the normal sign-in process.

Our crew rest seats on a flight not fully booked should be last sold/last assigned. We also ask that you document the occurrence by submitting an Intelex report in addition to emailing your officers (47@afahawaiian.org) so we can continue tracking the issue and ensuring compliance.

This message is for both pre-merger Alaska and Hawaiian Flight Attendants

        • Our JNC met with management this week on June 2 to June 4 in Seattle; our next negotiation session is scheduled for June 30 to July 3
        • A Tentative Agreement has been reached for Section 37 (Temporary Duty Assignments)
        • Our JNC made progress on vacation and staffing provisions, having discussions with both Alaska and Hawaiian stakeholders

        Negotiations Update

Our AFA Alaska + Hawaiian Joint Negotiating Committee (JNC) met this week for three days of collective bargaining with management. The JNC met with management from June 2 to June 4 in Seattle, WA. At the negotiating table for this session were:

Representing AFA and our Flight Attendants  Representing Management
Tim Green, Joint Negotiating Committee ChairpersonAllen Thieman, Vice President of Inflight, Alaska
Martin Gusman, Joint Negotiating Committee MemberJoe Wonderly, Vice President, Labor Relations, Alaska
Jeffrey Fuke, Joint Negotiating Committee MemberCarmen Williams, Managing Director, Labor Relations, Alaska
Virginia Fritz, Joint Negotiating Committee MemberBrittany Audette, Managing Director, Operations Staffing and Resource Management, Alaska
Heather Reier, Joint Negotiating Committee MemberKalani Sloat, Senior Director, Labor Relations, Hawaiian
Paula Mastrangelo, AFA Senior Staff NegotiatorMike Link, Labor Relations Program Manager, Alaska
Karen Themelis, Senior Labor Relations Business Partner, Alaska

Prior to this week’s session, the JNC held a small group meeting with Alaska and Hawaiian crew-planning stakeholders to explore vacation and staffing options in preparation for our joint session.  This week, the JNC continued the conversation with management to review the Alaska and Hawaiian vacation systems. We discussed how the Alaska vacation provisions are currently applied and how the different Hawaiian vacation provisions are used. Brittany Audette, Managing Director of Operations Staffing and Resource Management, joined us for this discussion.

The JNC also continued to work through Section 14 (Vacations). Recognizing that Hawaiian Flight Attendants currently have more flexibility with their vacation benefits, we are exploring ways to incorporate those benefits into the JCBA for the combined workgroup.

The JNC reached a tentative agreement on the new Section 37 (Temporary Duty Assignment). This new section primarily incorporated language from the Hawaiian CBA and added protections from other airlines’ Flight Attendant contracts. TDY (Temporary Duty Assignment) allows the company to establish a temporary base at a non-domicile location or to supplement staffing at an existing base temporarily. This section ensures Flight Attendants financial protection, including around-the-clock per diem, hotel stays for the duration of the TDY period, space-positive travel, and improved expense reimbursement. The goal is to ensure assignments are fair and Flight Attendants are supported, while also meeting operational and staffing needs.

We exchanged proposals for Section 35 (Flight Attendant Jumpseat and Pass Privileges) and Letter of Agreement 9 (Flight Attendant Jumpseat Occupancy). We are working to codify our travel benefits, including priority access to Flight Attendant jumpseats.

We also continued to exchange proposals on Section 16 (Sick Leave), but there are still significant differences between the two parties.

        Section by Section Progress

The Alaska CBA is being used as the basis of the joint contract for language purposes. Each section and provision from both contracts will be reviewed individually to incorporate and amend the strongest elements from each agreement.

        Sections discussed in this session:

        • Vacations (AS CBA Section 14 and HA CBA Section 18)
        • Sick Leave (AS CBA Section 16 and HA CBA Section 19)
        • Flight Attendant Jumpseat and Pass Privileges (AS CBA Section 35 and HA CBA Section 30)
        • 🆕 Temporary Duty Assignments (AS CBA does not address these provisions and HA CBA Section 15)

        Sections in ongoing discussion:

        • Leaves of Absence (AS CBA Section 15 and HA CBA Section 17)
        • General and Miscellaneous (AS CBA Section 24 and HA CBA Section 27)
        • Domiciles (AS CBA Section 28 and HA CBA Section 5, 14, and 27)
        • Training (AS CBA Section 30 and HA CBA Section 26)
        • Commuter Policy (AS CBA Section 36 and HA CBA Section 34-28)

Sections listed below are on hold until discussions regarding future sections, which affect specific provisions, take place.

        • Seniority (AS CBA Section 6 and HA CBA Section 9)
        • Grievance Procedures (AS CBA Section 19 and HA CBA Section 23)
        • Charters (AS CBA Section 33 and HA CBA Section 12)

        Crew Meal Survey

Thank you to everyone who took part in the Crew Meal Survey. We received 3,323 completed surveys from Flight Attendants, along with 509 partial responses. The JNC will review all feedback, including the partial surveys, as we evaluate the results. Your input helps us keep advocating for you.

        What’s Upcoming

Our next session with management is scheduled for June 30 to July 3.

To get things started, the JNC met with our MEC Reserve Chairpersons to talk about current reserve rules and possible improvements for our combined workgroup. We are finalizing a Reserve survey that will go out to the Membership later this month. Thank you to pre-merger Alaska MEC Reserve Committee Chairperson, Julie Thornton and pre-merger Hawaiian MEC Reserve Committee Chairperson, Kela Chong for sharing their expertise.

This message is for pre-merger Hawaiian Seattle Based Flight Attendants

Inflight Service Local Chair – SEA Focus

        Aloha Seattle Flight Attendants,

As our Seattle domicile continues to grow and evolve, your leadership has identified the need for an Inflight Service (IFS) Chair with a specific focus on SEA operations.

While our current Inflight Service Chair, Gary Mano’i, has supported all Council 47 members, we recognize the value of having a representative who is actively flying SEA-based routes, regularly interacting with Seattle crews, and able to provide direct feedback and advocacy regarding service-related concerns, challenges, and opportunities unique to the operation.

To help meet that need, we are opening a vacancy for:

Inflight Service Chair – SEA Focus (Local Council 47)

Inflight Service Chair Roles and Responsibilities

Due to the timely nature of this vacancy, we apologize for the short notice regarding the interview process. Interviews are optional and are not required to be considered for this position. Members who choose to interview will not receive preference over applicants who do not participate in an interview.

Interviews will be conducted June 17-19, 2026.

Members interested in serving should complete the following two steps:

        1. Submit a Willingness to Serve Form by June 17th (required)
        2. Schedule an interview using this link (optional)

We encourage any member who is passionate about inflight service and wants to help shape the future of our operation to apply.

Thank you for your continued involvement and commitment to supporting the members of Council 47.

        Mahalo,

        Josh Aoki – LEC President
Paul Ikioka – LEC Vice President
        Beth Hayes – LEC Secretary

Every June, we come together to honor LGBTQ Pride Month in the United States—a time to celebrate the remarkable resilience, diversity, and achievements of the LGBTQ community. Pride Month began as a tribute to the Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan in 1969, a pivotal moment that ignited the modern LGBTQ rights movement. The inaugural Pride March, held on June 28, 1970, marked the first anniversary of Stonewall and set a powerful precedent for advocacy and visibility. Today, Pride Month is recognized globally, with communities, organizations, and allies hosting vibrant parades, educational events, and meaningful conversations that foster inclusion, understanding, and progress.

Discover the History and Significance of Pride Month

If you’d like to learn more about the rich history of LGBTQ Pride Month and the ongoing pursuit of equality, consider exploring these resources:

        • National Archives – LGBTQI+ Pride Month
        • Library of Congress – Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer Pride Month
        • National Park Service – Stonewall National Monument
        • Smithsonian National Museum of American History – LGBTQ+ History
        • History Channel – Pride Month

        • PDX: Sunday, July 19 (Hosted by AFA Alaska Council 39)

Celebrate with an LGBTQ Pride Month AFA Pin

In 2018, the AFA Board of Directors adopted a resolution to officially recognize June as LGBTQ Pride Month. The resolution included the introduction of a special commemorative pin created for AFA Members to proudly wear throughout June. Each year since, AFA Members have worn the commemorative AFA Pride Pin as a visible sign of solidarity, inclusion, and our ongoing commitment to equality for all.

If you’d like to learn more about the AFA Pride Pin and its significance, please reach out to your Local Human Rights & Equity Committee. If you need a pin, keep an eye out for updates from your Local Council or connect directly with your LEC Officers for information on how to get one. Your participation matters, and together we create a more inclusive and supportive community.

        Portland Pride 2026

Greetings from your Council 39 Human Rights & Equity Committee! Summer is here, and that means Pride Season is upon us! Portland’s Pride Parade is Sunday, July 19, so remember to bid it off if you plan on attending. Also, don’t forget: June 19th is Juneteenth!

This year, we have the privilege of marching as part of the Oregon Labor Federation, AFL-CIO contingent in a clear stance from labor to get corporate greed out of Pride! Sign up to march using the button below. There will also be a sign making social on July 17, as well as a labor booth running all weekend at the festival.

March With AFA: Portland Pride 2026

There are more Pride events going on across the country and the HRE Committee is helping lead the way to provide access for Alaska + Hawaiian Flight Attendants. If you are interested in going to another Pride event or happen to be on a layover in a major city over a weekend in June and July, there are events you can be a part of with other AFA-represented Flight Attendants. Reach out to us and we would be happy to put you in contact!

Pride is especially important this year in an increasingly hostile socio-political landscape, one that continues to oppress and disenfranchise minorities and vulnerable populations in a multitude of ways. Many LGBTQ+ people experience multiple intersections of oppression and very much deserve to have a place of celebration, happiness, and support. Please consider bidding the time off, marching with us and enjoying the festivities. We would love to see you!
