        Rainmaker is Almost Here!

Rainmaker, the system used previously at Virgin America to track scheduling and pay, was adopted by Alaska for crew. The rollout plan includes a BETA test period with approximately 25% of crew (pilots and FAs).  Assuming the test is successful, the formal launch to everyone will occur June 1, 2021.  For more information and helpful resources visit: Alaskasworld>>Inflight>>Administration.\

It’s Been a Rough Year…Don’t Forget About EAP

A year later we are still in the middle of the COVID pandemic.  Although we may be more accustomed to all of the changes that it has imposed upon us, we can all agree that we are still enduring a challenging and difficult time.  AFA has trained EAP members to help FAs that are struggling.  To contact SFO EAP reps, please email sfo.eap@afaalaska.org.  Also, don’t forget that Alaska offers confidential services through Active Support EAP.

        ASHSC Base Safety Meeting

The next quarterly meeting of the Air Safety Health and Security Committee (ASHSC) for SFO is scheduled for April 28. Flight Attendants with questions for the committee can submit them via email to Brad Young, ASHSC Committee Chair and Cierra Lewis, SFO Base Manager.  Deadline for questions is 4/21/21. All submitted questions will be posted and answered in the next following ASHSC newsletter.

The SFO Human Rights (HR) Committee is looking for one additional committee member. Please review the HR webpage and review the requirements for more information.  Please email Sejal Patel  HR Committee Chair, and LECP Melissa Osborne with your expression of interest and for any additional information. The deadline to submit is 3/15/21.

        COVID-19 Updates

        Message from AFA International

Despite their role to maintain critical industry, Flight Attendants are not in a priority tier for the COVID vaccine in most of the country.  To help bring awareness and to advocate for priority status in all states, AFA is asking that FA’s write a letter to their governor and ask that Flight Attendants be included in Tier 1B. To read the full article and for more information on how to help with his advocacy please visit AFA Interactive.  Don’t forget to visit Alaskasworld for a copy of the COVID Authorization Letter:

        Severe Winter Storms in Texas

        Message from AFA International

know that disasters can change lives forever. While we can’t stop destructive events from happening, we can, as a Union, assist our members with their recovery. AFA established the Disaster Relief Fund after September 11th to assist our members whose lives were placed in harms way.  AFA members and retirees, whose primary residences are in the counties listed at the FEMA website are eligible for $200.00 from the AFA-CWA Disaster Relief Fund.  It is a gift made possible by the generosity of your fellow union sisters and brothers with AFA.

If you would like to apply for AFA-CWA Disaster Relief Funds, download the Disaster Relief Fund Application.  There are a few ways to submit your application:

        • Email the application to Linda Foster
        • Fax the completed application to 301-253-2790

Many already using this process to access sites such as online banking, and Alaska is now rolling it out to all employees for PeopleSoft and Office365 products.  The deadline to enroll in MFA is December 1, and employees that do not enroll by the deadline will be locked out of AS accounts.  Enrollment information will be sent to all employees via company email.

        Committee Update

        Reserve:

Council 35 would like to offer a special thanks to Rachel Sebastian for her commitment to SFO the last few years as Reserve Chair.  As a resident of the Portland area, Rachel is now lucky to be based at home and has transferred to PDX.  With the new opening, Reserve Committee member Kyle Ogiela, has now volunteered for the chair position.  Welcome Kyle!
Get to know Kyle in his own words:

Kyle started his aviation career in April 2018.  He was born and raised in Las Vegas where he then went on to serve a mission and lived in Paraguay for 2 years. He then attended BYU and obtained his Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in painting while taking advantage of several remote study programs that took him throughout Europe, Tonga, and New Zealand. Following school he went to Atlanta where he went into operations management with Pest Control companies which finally culminated with him moving to Seattle in 2007. In 2018 he turned his work experience toward aviation.  When he started as an agent he quickly moved to become a coach and then a lead. He jumped on the opportunity to transition to inflight and was the 1st graduating class of 2019.  He has loved the decision to come to inflight and even more excited having the opportunity to serve.  At the end of last year he joined the reserve committee.  He jumped right in to being a reserve buddy for the newer classes. He loves the ability to dive in and find answers.  He looks forward to learn more and of course assist in any way every day.

        Human Rights:

Back in June we introduced Sejal Patel as a new HR Committee member.  We are happy to report she has accepted the chair position for Council 35.  Thank you Sejal!

        End-of-Year Reminders

        Record Improvement:

JCBA§32.G.4 defines the year-end record improvement process for Flight Attendants. If a Flight Attendant has no more than 4 attendance points at the end of the year, s/he achieves 480 annual TFP, and the FA does not accumulate any points for the months of November and December, then her/his point balance will be brought to zero.  The manual adjustment occurs mid-January which will be reflected on FAs attendance point records.

        Guest Passes

Convert your unused companion travel passes before the end of day December 31st. Passes can be ticketed for 3 months after the conversion date.  Once converted the passes can be found in FLY:
        FLY>> Guest Passes>>Manage Guest Passes

        Trending Discipline

        Layovers and the Alcohol Policy

Previously AFA provided a list of “What the company knows about me.”  For layovers and hotels, this includes key swipes, hotel video images, and bar receipts that show times orders were placed and when paid. When a violation of the alcohol policy is suspected, the company can collect all of this information to provide evidence in support of the suspicion.  Additionally, any “disruption” to a hotel property by an FA puts the company crew hotel contract at risk, and normally discharge to the offending FA is the result of these incidents.

        RAP Violations

Management has been monitoring reserves and their location during the reserve availability period (RAP). FAs that are not within the base area during the entire RAP or reserves that leave base during airport standby have been discovered and this violation normally results in discharge. This includes commuting delays.  If your commute flight arrives after your RAP begins, this would be considered a violation.  Your Council 35 officers recommend that those FAs new to reserve, be sure to familiarize yourself with §11 of the JCBA to understand the rules regarding availability and contactability.

SFO Air Safety, Health & Security Committee (ASHSC) Update

By Brad Young, ASHSC Chair and Council Representative

ASAP:  When can we use it?  When should we not use it?

An ASAP is created specifically to provide a means for employees to report safety-related events or concerns. All individual ASAP reports are clearly labeled as such. Each ASAP report must contain sufficiently detailed information about a safety event so that it can be evaluated by the ASAP ERC (Event Review Committee).

Two types of reports are that are to be submitted under the ASAP:

        • Safety-related reports that appear to involve one or more violations of the regulations (e.g., deviating from routine flight duties (Policy and Procedure)-skipped part of the regulatory demo in announcement).
        • Reports that identify a general safety concern, but do not appear to involve a violation of the regulations (e.g., flight attendant concerns that the design of a galley cart configuration could lead to an on the job injury).

Flight Attendant reports that would be excluded for ASAP that involve:

        • Possible criminal activity
        • Substance abuse
        • Controlled substances
        • Intentional falsification or disregard for safety

Accidental ingestion of a possible controlled substance is not eligible for ASAP.  If you find yourself accidentally ingesting something that could result in a positive drug test, please notify your Council 35 officers or EAP for guidance.

        September Leaves

Crew planning recently offered Staffing Adjustment Leaves (SAL) of both 30 and 60 day durations. The MEC heard from many FAs disappointed with the offer and the inability to secure a leave for September if already on a SAL.  Although the leaves offered were contractually compliant, the company recognized the challenge with how this would affect FAs already on a leave.  As a result, an updated bulletin was posted indicating that SALs have been converted to 30-day only for August and bidding for September will be open in a few weeks to provide the fairest option to all FAs interested in remaining on a continuous leave.

        Recurrent Checklists

A recent audit of recurrent training (RT) completion packets revealed that many didn’t have the appropriate check marks to indicate a completed drill.  This caused many FAs to be recalled to attend RT a second time to prevent dequal status. As a result of the audit, the instructors have been extra fastidious with paperwork review, however it is recommended that FAs monitor their own completion packets to ensure the proper checks have been made after completing a drill.

Council 35 Committee Update: Welcome New Members!

        Human Rights:  Sejal Patel

In 2016, Sejal fulfilled a childhood dream when she earned her wings with Virgin America. Fueled by her love of travel and desire to switch industries and careers, she fell in love with flying and more importantly, the people she has worked with and met. She quickly learned that a good crew can turn even the most hideous pairing into one of your favorite trips and believes in that to this day. Sejal sought out to join the Human Rights Committee because she wanted to make a change at our airline and do the hard work to make Alaska Airlines a better, more inclusive, place for our flight attendants. This is not going to be an easy task and will require heavy lifting, difficult conversations and uncomfortable situations, but it’s the only way to create meaningful, lasting change and she is committed to the goal.

Interested in joining a committee?  Please review the committee page and send your expression of interest to sfo@afaalaska.org.

        Membership Dues

        by James Ikehara

As a reminder, Article II.C.1.b of the AFA Constitution & Bylaws require that AFA dues continue to be paid during any leave of absence less than 90 days.  If you currently pay your dues through payroll deduction, dues payments will continue to be deducted as long as you continue to receive a paycheck with sufficient funds for all other payroll deductions plus your AFA dues.  If you are no longer receiving a paycheck or your paycheck does not cover all of your payroll deductions, AFA dues will not be deducted and you will instead receive an invoice from AFA International Membership Services. If you receive an invoice or statement indicating that you owe AFA dues, payment can be made in one of two ways:

        • By credit card-Online
        • By mailing a check directly to AFA International Membership Services

        3rd Quarter CBT Due Soon!

        September 21, 2018 10:30

We have 66 SAN Flight Attendants that have not completed the 3rd Quarter CBT (Computer Base Training). The title of the required training is Q3 inflight service updates.

The current training is due September 30, 2018.

Failure to complete the required quarterly trainings by the deadline can result in discipline of an Oral Warning and meetings with Management.

Open your Cornerstone App on your IMD. After logging in all uncompleted courses will show on the main page. Remember its always a good idea to take screen shots of your completed courses as backup.

If your main screen is blank you can double check your completed courses by clicking on the 3 dots in the upper right hand corner and choosing the completed tab. All completed trainings will be visible there. All non completed courses will be under the Active tab.

If you have any concerns regarding the current trainings contact any of the SAN Supervisors.

        July Newsletter

        July 18, 2018 13:30

        Transition Training

Transition Training began last week.  Despite recent updates to the Cornerstone Training program, we are still receiving reports of technical difficulties with both the app and the desktop version.  If you experience trouble, go to https://support.afaalaska.org, and open a ticket.  We would encourage you to start early, to avoid problems.

We are also aware it is taking longer than 4 hours to complete. Please make sure to include that in your trouble ticket above.

The most important thing with any computer or IMD Training, screen shot or take a picture of the completion page. Do not rely on the program to register you as completed.  If it does not show you as completed, we need some sort of evidence to be able to manually process your completion.

When taking the test remember it is open book and you can take it from your IMD or from a computer. To make the test easier to complete have your Manual, Ghost Manual and Study Guide open on one device and the test open in a separate device so you don’t have to switch back and forth. In the event that you fail the test, you will receive an email advising you that you have 7 days after class ends to retake a paper version.  You can take the paper version during lunch break at TT or schedule to take it at base.

You can find the Ghost Manual on the Training Tab – Transition Training Resources – “Ghost Manual”

The Ghost Manual is the combined manual we will be using starting next year.

Practice your door drills, take a deep breath and go slow. The training is very hands on, try not to stress to much.

        CBT Training

The most recent CBT training was due May 11, 2018.  There were 13 Flight Attendants issued discipline because of failure to complete the training.  Several of these disciplines have been rescinded after AFA was able to determine why the training had not been completed.  If you were issued discipline and have not responded to our attempts to reach you, or you have email or screen shots showing your technical difficulties with the program please contact San@afaalaska.org. There is a possibility of getting the discipline reversed.

        Required Items

In a recent bulletin, Inflight Performance announced that forgotten required items will result in steps of discipline.  We are aware of several recent instances of expired badges, as well as reporting without an IMD.  Make certain that you have all required items before reporting to your flight.

        EAP Committee

We recently posted openings for EAP representatives.  We were overwhelmed by the number of Flight Attendants who expressed interest.  We reviewed the applications and chose 3 flight attendants to join our EAP Committee. We will be looking again at the beginning of the year and will be contacting those who were not selected to gauge interest and open it to anyone interested to apply again including hopefully Flight Attendants on the Airbus side who will have been able to transfer into SAN.

        Supplemental Insurance

Supplemental Insurance Enrollment, through National Group Protection, will take place during the week of 8/14-16, in SAN.  The premiums for these coverages can be payroll deducted.  If SAN isn’t a convenient location, drop into any base during scheduled visits.

        Critical Illness Coverage

        Whole Life Insurance

There are some benefit enhancements/upgrades this year, so please take the time to sit down with a benefit counselor and review your options.  This is also an excellent time to make sure you have filed for your annual health screening benefits, which are part of the accident and critical illness benefit plans.
